The Lantern Festival is a special Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the Chinese lunar calendar every year. It marks the end of the Spring Festival celebrations. This festival started a long time ago during the Han Dynasty when people began to light honour Buddha.
During the Lantern Festival, people enjoy watching beautiful lanterns, solving fun riddles that are written on the lanterns, and eating a special food called yuanxiao or tangyuan. Lanterns are a big part of this festival. They are in many shapes and colors and are hung in streets, alleys, and homes. There are also big fairs where people go to see lots of lanterns and try to guess the answers to riddles.
Eating yuanxiao or tangyuan is another important custom of this festival. These are sticky rice balls with sweet fillings like bean paste or sesame. They are round, which means togetherness and happiness, hoping that families will stay close and happy.
There are also exciting dragon and lion dances during the Lantern Festival. These dances are performed to scare away bad luck and bring good luck and peace for the new year. Kids really love watching these big and colorful dances.
The Lantern Festival is a big part of Chinese culture. It shows how much Chinese people enjoy life and have good hopes for the future. With all these traditions, they share their dreams for a great life and show love for their families.
