Know Your Edge! Burr vs. Shear Edge in Stainless Steel
Ever wondered why some cut stainless steel feels razor-sharp and dangerous, while others are smooth and safe to handle? It all comes down to the EDGE.
Understanding the difference between a BURR and a clean SHEAR EDGE is crucial for safety, quality, and the success of your next project.
🔪 The BURR (The Rough & Sharp One)
What it is: A raised, rough, often razor-sharp ridge of excess material left on the edge after cutting (especially with methods like plasma cutting, some sawing, or laser cutting at incorrect parameters).
How to spot it: 🧤 Run your finger along the edge (CAREFULLY!). You'll feel a sharp, rough protrusion. Visibly, it often looks like a jagged, metallic lip or fin along the cut.
Why it matters: It's a SAFETY HAZARD, can ruin welded finishes, and is generally a sign of a lower-quality cut that needs secondary processing (deburring).
✂️ The SHEAR EDGE (The Clean & Smooth One)
What it is: A relatively smooth, flat edge produced by clean shearing or blanking processes. The metal is cleanly sliced without creating that rough protruding fin.
How to spot it: It feels smooth and flat to the touch. Visibly, the edge is uniform, often with a slight smooth "break" or a clean line. It might have a small, consistent "die roll" on the back side, but no sharp, torn burr.
Why it matters: It's safer to handle, requires less post-processing, provides better fit-up for welding, and indicates a higher-quality cutting operation.

TOUCH TEST (Carefully!): Sharp snag = BURR. Smooth feel = SHEAR EDGE.
VISUAL CHECK: Look for a ragged, torn lip = BURR. Look for a clean, consistent line = SHEAR EDGE.
