Understanding Airless Spray Tip Sizes

Selecting the right airless spray tip for your paint sprayer is an important decision since it will affect the overall function. Most spray guns come with a universal thread so that you can attach any type of airless spray tip that you’re needing.
However, it can sometimes be quite frustrating to figure out the exact airless spray tip that you need since different paint sprayers require different tips. There are general airless spray tips, fine finish low-pressure tips, striping field marking tips, and heavy-duty tips.
Usually, the types are categorized by what they are used for. This helps when trying to select the right one. Selecting the right airless spray tip isn’t something you want to screw up as it can be a hard thing to fix if you end up using the wrong one.

Guide To Choosing The Right Airless Spray Tip

Check out our other resources if you need help understanding what a painter is and everything you need to know about the different paint sprayers. By reading these details you’ll not only save yourself money but you’ll also save time.

Regardless of the brand you choose, whether it’s Wagner, Graco, Titan or one of the others, the right tip will make the paint job much more efficient and will look like it was done by a professional (if done correctly). Here are some important details to ensure you select the right airless spray tip for the right job.

Selecting The Right Airless Spray Tip

The most important thing to consider when selecting an airless spray tip is the size of the tip. Due to the way airless paint sprayers work (and how they’re assembled), you’ll want to make sure the airless spray tip selected isn’t bigger than the pump.

This might seem logical, however, it’s often hard to tell when just glancing at the tips. You can always measure the size of the pump before you select your tip (to guarantee you get one that will fit).

Making Sense of the Different Tip Sizes

Okay, so now that you know the importance of selecting the right airless spray tip, here we will cover what the numbers on the airless sprayer tips mean. Most airless paint spraying tips have a three-digit code. Sometimes there are letters in front of it as well.

The numbers on the airless sprayer tip will look something like “FFT310” (this number is actually one of the most popular airless spray finish tips). So when you’re looking at the sequence, pay attention to the numbers.

Take the first number you see in that sequence. In this ****, “FFT310” (the number is 3). Then multiply that number by two, to give you the fan size. So this airless spray tips fan size would be (3 x 2 = 6) six. In this ****, the equation gives you a rough estimate of the size of the fan.

Next, you’ll need to figure out the or***ce size. Or***ce size is the size of the opening of a pipe or tube. So, in this ****, it’s the opening in which gallons (of paint) pass through the tip.

Another way to measure the airless spray tip size is though figuring out its gallons per minute also knows as “GPM”.

It’s the worst when you get a tip that’s too big and you can’t use it. Through figuring out the GPM you’ll be able to get the right tip that will fit just right, without being too big.

So knowing the fan width and the or***ce size will help to give you an idea of how thick of a coating you’ll be spraying.

How many gallons per minute can travel though this tip?

All you have to do to figure this out is to look at the last two numbers in the sequence “FFT310”, so in this ****, it’s the 1 and 0. So this tip has a .010 (ten-thousandth) opening for the paint to move though.

It’s important to know this since it will affect how quickly the paint will move through the tip.

The Type of Paint Spraying Tip Depends on the Finish You’re Using

Stain or lacquer – .009 -.013

Oil Based Paint – .013 – .015

Latex Paint – .015 – .019

Heavy Latex- .025+

Elastomeric & Block Filler- .025 – .035+

Smooth Elastomertic- .025+

Airless Paint Spraying Tip Final Thoughts

Hopefully, some of these details will help you out on your next painting project. It can be frustrating when you’re just about to start a paint job and you realize you’re missing a part (or your paint sprayer won’t work).

Keep in mind once you have the correct tip, it’s important to keep your pressure on low when using your machine (if you want the spray tip to last). Keeping it on a lower pressure will prevent your spray tip from wearing down and can actually double the lifespan of the tip.

Also if at any point you forget these details or are unsure which tip to still choose, check the paint container. Often there will be details on the paint container’s label, stating the type of spray tip you should be using.

If that doesn’t work, someone at your local hardware store in the paint department could help (since it’s their job and they tend to know all the ins and outs of paint spraying tips).

Painters Tape Wall Design

In today’s world, where status and lifestyle are at its prime, the greatest (and sometimes the most absurd) investments are made at a place that we all call home. The top-notch furniture with wall painting adding to its beauty has led to the emergence of a billion-dollar industry in the previous decade alone.

But for many of those who think these expenses can be avoided, DIY is the way to go. Painters tape art is one of the most groundbreaking industries that has acquired the market with its unique scope of design and creativity.

10 Painter’s Tape Wall Designs

A couple of paintbrushes, sprays, some best paints tape, scale, scissors and, obviously colors are the things required to create mesmerizing walls. With such minimal requirements, artists are able to create a futuristic output. And figuring out how to use painters tape doesn’t even take much time.

Wall art just doesn’t add to the beauty and aesthetics of the place. It has proved itself to be an amenity for psychological therapy and also contributes to the educational side for kids. Tape art painting has an edgeless spectrum with infinite possibilities. Let’s take a look.

1. Triangle Paint Designs

Think, that you had a busy day. You are extremely tired and return to your apartment to just a simple black wall. Not appealing right! Now imagine the same wall being converted into a mesmerizing art wall with the use of triangle paint design. Not so boring!

2. Random shapes

A mixture of different polygons can be used with various colors for a bright theme and can also be used as a background for the children’s room. These art masterpieces can be used to teach toddlers about shapes and colors together.

Interesting, right? If you are thinking that these wall art are just restricted to geometric shapes, then the answer is NO! As mentioned earlier it is an edgeless field with several outcomes and here’s an example.

3. Human Element design

Such designs are created with a stencil. These are very tricky designs and have their own separate genre. It is generally used in hotels and fancy cafes as it has a unique base. These walls once created make an impact such that the viewer holds back to watch its details.

4. Stripes

A sober and one of the most preferred designs by masses is the stripes. Its wide range of designs and combinations is the catch that people love these walls. Its range enables new designs every time an artist works on it. It even has its own subcategories ranging from a simple rainbow to a completely random design.

5. Abstract

What’s the fun in basic designs when you can have and enjoy the goodness of abstract designs? The illusionistic designs create a psychological impact and are a form of therapy for mentally unstable people. Other than that it has its own beauty and when we go to think about these designs, there are millions of possibilities that just promise to spill out.

6. Black and White Gallery Walls

The ambiance of these colors just creates a dramatic appearance on the walls. Be it a geometric shape or abstract or just plain black and white wall. This combination always establishes a breathtaking effect.

The persona created by these colors makes it a choice of royal. A little precaution can enhance your work and shorten the working time. These little hacks can save your day from a messy disaster. Just have a look!

7. Confetti painter’s tape Design

A little creativity, simple and soothing designs can be made. Not every design is meant to be encircling end to end. Just a throw of tapes and paints can make a bigger picture.

A joyous and enriching output is obtained by these paint designs. These wall designs make great backdrops for all kinds of events, like a baby shower, engagement, party, or any celebration.

8. Chevron tape wall design

These designs are used on day to day bedroom walls. A tired mind relaxes by such designs due to its simplicity and symmetric nature. They come in innumerable designs and thus have such a big spot in the industry. So, if you have an empty bedroom wall this is an option worth considering.

9. Pastel coolness

A perfectly fused use of colors can create a vibrant wall. And, so is created a pastel coolness design. These designs have dominant colors and when they fuse they form a single prominent color. You don’t need professional skills for creating such aesthetic walls. A basic color knowledge and proper use of tapes can enable great design.

10. Oversized Paint Designs

The beauty of the room doesn’t just lie in miniature art. Big, massive designs in enormous size rooms look classy and it just holds the aura of room for the beholder. Finally, we can say that exaggeration brings out good in stuff.

Enamel vs Latex Paint

Have you bought a new home or are you looking to repaint your home or fix your garage? If you own paint spray guns, you are likely to do it yourself.

Like any responsible adult who is into DIY, you start by checking the stores for the best paint that is suitable for your needs. Maybe you are just looking for the paint that is best for painting cabinets.

Enamel vs Latex Paint

Since you and your family are the ones going to be exposed to the paint, it only makes sense for you to understand which paint works.

The two popular options available in the market are enamel paints and latex paints. But how do we know how latex paint is different than enamel paint? Let’s find out.

Some Important Terminology

Before getting into the differences, we need to understand the meaning behind the terminology.

When we look around most of the water-based interior/exterior paints use the word “LATEX” on their label. But did you know that there isn’t actually any latex in the paint? The word latex simply indicates a level of malleability and versatility integrated into that particular paint product.

The word “ENAMEL” is dubious too. There’s no actual “ENAMEL” in the paint itself. Enamel paints have one good quality which is that it provides a smooth, hard finish at the end of the job.

In several cases we see paint companies use “ENAMEL” on their high-end options, simply because it’s an appealing descriptive word. It makes the painting sound more glossy, beautiful and durable.

Latex Paint

Let us understand what latex paint is. Latex paint is more commonly known as acrylic paint. In latex paint, the carrier is typically water with glycols ethers as a solvent.

Note that Latex paint does not contain latex from the rubber plant. The term “LATEX” in the paint actually refers to the resin (binder) used in the paint.

Today, many paints are made with water as their thinner but with resins that are not latex, and are referred to terms as “water-thinned” or “water-reducible”. If you see any paint being called ‘latex’ that’s because it contains a plastic resin that’s not made of rubber. Instead, it’s made of polyvinyl or acrylics.

If you want to paint a un-primed drywall or stonewall or brick wall, you should opt for latex paint and a suitable latex paint sprayer. It also works well on surfaces that have already been painted with other latex or oil-based paints.

Enamel Paint

Typically, the term “Enamel paint” is used to describe an oil-based product. Enamel paint is a paint that can easily dry in air and turns into a hard, usually glossy, finish coated surface.

They are majorly used for outdoor paint jobs. Most enamel paints are alkyd resin-based, while some enamel paints have been made by adding varnish to oil-based paint.

The origin of enamel paint was in the 1800s when the paints were less reliable and whitewash paints were known to smudge off. This was a time when calling a product “enamel paint” was a powerful marketing move.

Enamel at that time was known as vitreous shell surface of porcelain and ceramic tiles which were impermeable, sanitary and very tough.

Establishing an idea to link cookware, tile, sinks, and bathtub enamel to paint was creative and also convenient to indicate that this paint was equally water-resistant and tough.

Difference Between Latex and Enamel Paints

When we are using latex paint it does not provide a glossy finish whereas enamel paints are meant to provide a glossy finish. As a result, if you need to do a job that requires glossy output then enamel paints are recommended, whereas if you wish to give a paint coating or a colorful coat on your project latex paints are recommended because latex paints are already resin mixed.

If you have to paint a large portion of the wall or a long wall then latex paints are suggested as they are water-thinned paints. Don’t make the mistake of using enamel based paint as they would require a lot of solvents for thinning, cleaning and to complete your task which will consume your time as well as money.

If you wish to use paint for decorative purpose then use enamel-based paints as they don’t leave much brush strokes behind making the output look smooth and attractive. Latex paints are a little thick on the appearance which makes it look a little rough and uneven.

There is a major disadvantage of latex paint that it smudges off or starts peeling out after a certain span of time. So you will have to re-apply another coat of paint. If you are using enamel based paint then it will hold on to a surface for a longer period of time.

When you are using enamel paint, it can be used on a large range of products and materials like glass, porcelain, aluminum, stainless steel, ceramic, etc. You also have the advantage of using paint sprayer for latex. But if you are planning on using latex paint, note that it cannot be used for such a wide range of products. It can be only used on concrete or on moist surfaces.

If you want to use a light color for a paint job then enamel paint is your correct choice as latex paint would require 2-3 coating to get the perfect result which will again increase your time and budget for the job.

Enamel paints can be used for various artistic jobs as well because of its glossy output, smooth finishing and reduced brush marks. Latex paint can’t be used for such jobs.

The major advantage of latex paint is that it is a water-based paint hence is easily washable. If you already own interior paint spray guns, the entire activity of painting becomes less expensive – including the maintenance.

One major drawback for enamel paints is that once the job is done the brushes, rollers and other things used to apply paint need to be cleaned with solvents or thinners, whereas on the application of latex paints you just need to dissolve them in water for some time and they come out clean.

Guide To Choosing The Right Airless Spray Tip

Check out our other resources if you need help understanding what a painter is and everything you need to know about the different paint sprayers. By reading these details you’ll not only save yourself money but you’ll also save time.

The right tip will make the paint job much more efficient and will look like it was done by a professional (if done correctly).

The numbers on the airless sprayer tip will look something like “FFLP310” (this number is actually one of the most popular airless spray finish tips).

All you have to do to figure this out is to look at the last two numbers in the sequence “FFLP310”, so in this ****, it’s the 1 and 0. So this tip has a .010 (ten-thousandth) opening for the paint to move though.

It’s important to know this since it will affect how quickly the paint will move through the tip.

The Type of Paint Spraying Tip Depends on the Finish You’re Using

How to Clean an Airless Paint Sprayer

Airless paint sprayers get the job done quicker but they also require more cleaning and aftercare. It is important for their functionality and lifespan that you always take the time to properly clean after use.

So maybe you are wondering how to clean airless paint sprayer that you have just invested in. The first time you do this might be confusing because you are dealing with many different parts. However, once you have done it a few times it should feel like a straightforward routine.

This is how to properly clean the most popular airless paint sprayers. Remember a clean paint sprayer is a good sprayer.

Attending to the Different Parts

Though each model might differ slightly, the main components are generally the same. When cleaning paint sprayer, it is better to take the device apart so that you ensure that you are getting into all the crevices where your material and debris might be.

The 3 main parts to clean are the device as a whole, the nozzle, and the ***. At the start of the cleaning, you can keep the tool assembled to remove the majority of the materials but later on, you will need to pull off the *** and nozzles for closer handling.

Water or Thinner?

Do you need a paint sprayer cleaner? This is an easy question to answer. Use tap water to clean water-based materials like latex and use thinner to remove oil-based paints like lacquer.

Never confuse the two types of paint remover required because it can damage the device if the wrong one is used. Also, don’t use heavy corrosive liquids because that too may cause damage.

Steps on How to Clean an Airless Paint Sprayer

Follow the cleaning steps in the correct order when cleaning airless paint sprayer. Start with removing any excess and then carefully clean the filters, nozzle, and ***.

Step 1: Set Up Your Buckets

Depending on whether you’re spraying oil-based such as lacquer, or water-based paints such as emulsion, you’ll need to vary your paint sprayer cleaner.

You need one bucket filled with water or thinner (depending on the material type, see above) and one empty bucket to empty the dirty liquid cleaner into.

Step 2: Clear Out the Remaining Paint

Place the suction in your clean bucket and aim the *** at your empty bucket. Use both the prime mode and spray mode to push out any remaining material.

Step 3: Cleaning the Various Filters

This is an important step in the how to clean a paint sprayer guide. Once it is cleared, you can start cleaning the smaller parts of the airless sprayer. Start with the filters.

Because of how airless paint sprayers work, there are normally 2 or 3 filters on semi-professional to professional sprayers, they are:

Suction filter – found on the end of the suction hose that is submerged into the material

Manifold filter – found in the machine itself, normally on the left or right side

Pencil *** filter – found in the handle of the airless spray ***

You should be able to refer to your user manual to see the various components of your spray ***. Here’s an example of the Graco user manual.

Take the pencil filter out of the ***, the manifold filter out of the machine and the suction filter off the end of the suction hose, then place them in the empty bucket to soak in the solvent or water. Do not place the entire *** in the solvent because this can be abrasive, only put the filters into soak.

Put on a pair of gloves and start wiping away anything left over. For the stubborn bits use an old stiff brush and scrub away gently.

Step 4: Clean the Nozzles

This is the tedious part when cleaning a paint sprayer but there are a few tools that can make it easier for you. The best way is to use an old toothbrush, small pipe cleaners and if required, a very thin needle.

Below is an example of the exact spray *** found on the bestselling Graco X5 & Graco Magnum X7, among others.

Submerse the spray tip in water or thinners for a few minutes, then use the toothbrush to scrub either side of the tungsten carbide spray nozzle. Be sure to inspect it up close before calling it a day and storing it.

You should be able to see a pin-prick of daylight through the nozzle when you hold it up to the light.

Only use the needle as a last resort if the hole is completely blocked with any materials or debris.

Step 5: Scrub the Spray ***

Now it is time to get into the small parts of the sprayer *** itself. Since you are dealing with different sized parts, you also need different sized cleaning brushes to get into all the tiny spaces.

Some of the parts are more fragile than others so it is also a good idea to keep a few softer brushes on hand. For example, the plastic and rubber seals are easily broken so you want to use a softer more gentle brush.

You’ll want to take the spray guard off and clean that separately, you’ll also need to flush it under a faucet.

With the spray tip, spray guard, hose and *** filter removed, hold the *** upside down under a fast flow of water and hold the ******* down. You want the water to be flowing into where the filter previously was and out of the spray area.

Do this for around 60 seconds to ensure it is clear.

Step 6: Wipe Dry

Once all the parts are completely clean, you can wipe off the solvent or water until completely dry. Use a clean dry cloth for this.

Extra Maintenance

Besides learning how to clean your new paint sprayer thoroughly once you’ve read all our paint sprayer reviews, you also need to do some maintenance. One of the most important things to take care of is the piston and packing kit.

The pump system is particular to specific brands so always read the manual to check what needs to be oiled and how often. The piston pump can do with regular greasing before each job, just to make sure that the device continues to run smoothly.

If you’re using a rental paint sprayer, keeping it clean is of the utmost importance if you don’t want to be hit with unexpected cleaning and repair costs, so keep it clean!!

That is our guide on how to clean airless paint sprayer, we hope it has helped with any questions you might have had, happy spraying.
