Sin tiburones, el océano colapsa
🦈 El tiburón sedoso (Carcharhinus falciformis), es una de las especies de tiburón más impactadas en el Pacífico Oriental.
Costa Rica ha sido identificada como uno de los principales exportadores de aletas de tiburón, siendo la mayoría del tiburón sedoso.

✨ Los tiburones son depredadores tope y especies clave, lo que significa que regulan ecosistemas marinos enteros:
• Controlan poblaciones
• Mantienen el equilibrio entre especies
• Ayudan a conservar arrecifes y sistemas pelágicos saludables

Su desaparición ya está generando efectos en cascada en toda la red trófica.
⚠️ A pesar de su importancia ecológica, los tiburones suelen generar miedo. En realidad, los ataques son extremadamente raros: al año mueren 10 veces más personas porque les cae un 🥥 en la cabeza que por el mordisco de un tiburón.

El miedo genera ignorancia, pero el conocimiento impulsa la protección.

🐋 La Ballena Jorobada Tica

En Costa Rica tenemos el privilegio de recibir a las majestuosas ballenas jorobadas (Megaptera novaeangliae) durante gran parte del año 🐋

Todos conocemos las que nos visitan desde el Sur entre julio y octubre. Pero lo que muchos no saben es que entre diciembre y abril también aparecen otros individuos… más oscuras, a veces más ariscas, y comúnmente llamadas las “del norte”.

✨ Lo fascinante es que estas en realidad no son el Árctico: pertenecen a una población única de Centroamérica, con patrones propios de alimentación, coloración y genética.

Si bien sus sitio de alimentación se encuentran principalmente en el sur de Canadá, es común verlas alimentándose en las aguas productivas de Nicaragua y Costa Rica.

⚠️ Esta población es pequeña (menos de 1500 individuos), y se considera en peligro de extinción.

En El Jobo, Guanacaste, durante su época de crianza, son observadas y monitoreadas por , quienes han generado información valiosa tras años de seguimiento.

Tags are useful tools that allow scientists to determine variables such as growth rate, population size, dispersal, origin, etc. In the case of , there are two commonly used , metal ones, or electronic such as these. The metal tags are installed on their flippers, allowing for external ID, but they tend to loose them, different from the latter, which are inserted inside the organism, so there is no loosing it, but you need a special device to read it, therefore if the organism migrates to place where they don’t have this device, we won’t get the data… in and life, it’s all about trade offs and objectives! What type of tag do you think better?

It’s amazing how fast and effectively their populations are growing, and they are so amazing and magical to watch 😍😍! At we carry out to monitor our visiting population of mothers and calves, which come here as part of their migration, enjoying our life-rich waters while the calves grow enough to support their migration back to the poles!
