Exploring the rich history of water in Cyprus, we came across an insightful timeline that reveals the island’s efforts to address water scarcity over the decades.
After gaining independence in 1960, the Republic of Cyprus faced the challenge of frequent water shortages. The government set a long-term goal: to create water-saving projects that would ensure a reliable supply for both agriculture and households. This led to the construction of numerous dams across the island, which played a crucial role in managing and storing water.
Aqueduct tanks were built to store the water, where chemical controls were carried out to ensure its quality before it was distributed to homes. As Cyprus rapidly developed, both the population and industries demanded even more water, pushing the government to find additional reliable sources.
In response, the decision was made to invest in desalination technology. Today, desalination plants and dams provide 98% of the water needed by consumers in Cyprus. This transition represents a monumental shift in how Cyprus ensures a sustainable water supply for its people and industries.

Καθώς ψάχναμε να μάθουμε περισσότερα για την ιστορία του νερού στην Κύπρο, πέσαμε πάνω σε μια ενδιαφέρουσα χρονολογική διαδρομή που μας έδειξε πώς το νησί αντιμετώπισε την έλλειψη νερού μέσα στα χρόνια.
Μετά την ανεξαρτησία το 1960, η Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία ήξερε ότι η λειψυδρία ήταν ένα σοβαρό πρόβλημα. Έτσι, έθεσε στόχο να φτιάξει έργα που θα βοηθούσαν στη μακροπρόθεσμη εξοικονόμηση νερού. Κατασκευάστηκαν φράγματα που έκαναν μεγάλη διαφορά για τη γεωργία και τα νοικοκυριά.
Το νερό έφτανε στις δεξαμενές των υδραγωγείων, όπου γίνονταν όλοι οι απαραίτητοι έλεγχοι, και έτσι το πολύτιμο νερό έφτανε στα σπίτια μας.
Με τη γρήγορη ανάπτυξη και τις αυξημένες ανάγκες για νερό, η κυβέρνηση στράφηκε στην αφαλάτωση. Σήμερα, το 98% των αναγκών σε νερό καλύπτονται από τις μονάδες αφαλάτωσης και τα φράγματα.
