Today in Czech there is Čarodějnice - a day of making bonfires to protect bad luck, as according to tradition fire has a cleansing power. In Irish tradition, Beltine is a symbol of new begging and in that day you put down all fire and make a new one (don’t ask me, where is the logic, I feel the beauty of fire in it’s constant, that it’s the same ever since and everywhere, but what do I know). It all combines with belief in witches and especially here, in alchemists Prague, this tradition remained strong.
In this day I think about women accused for being witches, for free minds who suffered. I think about my favourite female writers, like Magdalena Tulli, Helen Oyeyemi or Tove Janson. I think about how late I let myself discover the power of sisterhood, even though one thing I’ve been sure since ever: that I have been always surrounded by amazing, inspiring, strong and gentle, intelligent, smart, funny, inspiring women, girls, ladies, fairies, witches and all the rest, however you define yourself.
I am more than grateful for having you, for teaching and inspiring me. I salute all my witches 🧙
