A quiet Sunday and very loud colours. A green matryoshka with daisies and blue eyes — five dolls, and each has her own face.

We paint the background with a brush, two coats, then the design, then the varnish. Two rounds of drying. That's why the daisies don't rub off — not from children's hands, not from years on a shelf.

The smallest one is the size of a fingernail. Check when you open it.

Orange-and-black matryoshka with little ladybugs, made and hand-painted from start to finish.

The matryoshka was born in Russia in the 1890s at Abramtsevo: woodturner Vasily Zvyozdochkin shaped the doll and artist Sergei Malyutin painted her, inspired by a Japanese nesting figure of the sage Fukurokuju.
