One of the oldest pigments in art history — and one of the rarest today.
Azurite (Pigment Blue 30) is a natural copper carbonate, formed by the weathering of copper ore and almost always found alongside malachite. Its use predates lapis lazuli as a pigment, and from the medieval period through the 18th century it was Europe’s most important blue — often ground fine and used as an affordable stand-in for the far more costly natural ultramarine.
Some of the finest historical material came from the copper mines of Chessy, near Lyon — the source of azurite’s old trade name, chessylite. Synthetic reproductions of this blue are barely made anymore, so what you’re looking at is genuine mineral, washed and graded by hand into different shades and grinds.

Kremer Solvent Studio is a high-purity hydrocarbon solvent with an aromatic content below 2%. It thins oil colours and painting mediums and cleans brushes and palettes.
