Smoke and Fire Festival

It’s been a long and Winding Road but there is light at the end of the tunnel and it doesn’t appear to be an oncoming train!

As promised I said I’d let you know when Cococabana is in stock . As of Tuesday next there will be a very limited supply in the UK and when it’s gone it’s gone until next season. BUT , and for me this is exciting news , we are launching a new Virgin Coconut shell product and it’s good, very good . I and some professional users here in Germany have conducted some very thorough testing and research before pulling the trigger but pull it we have . Like everything we do quality and sustainability are the key pillars and these have those in abundance . They will run alongside Cococabana , they offer a new dimension to the BBQ connoisseur and we are very proud to be bringing this product. You’ll have to view the video to see what’s gotten us all excited. Arriving Tuesday you can contact me directly or via Messenger for more information.

And it doesn’t stop there . Covid absolutely floored us from a moving goods perspective but we’ve not sat back. We’ve used the time to learn even more about making quality sustainable charcoal . We are expanding our operations in India and will launch a number of new products into next season.
It finally feels like a good time to be a sustainable charcoal manufacturer.

To those that have sent messages of support and encouragement we want to truly thank you. Without you , and especially your patience and custom , we wouldn’t be where we are today.
And a very special word of thanks to those that buy our products not just because they perform as a BBQ fuel but also with a concerned eye on the environment 🙏.

Cook on Nutz not on Trees !

Dear Cococabana Briketeer ,

‘Tis with a heavy heart I am writing this note given the tremendous support you all gave in 2020 . Whilst Covid raged you kept our lights on we kept your Grills glowing .
I’ve waited as long as I can while hoping for there was to be a breakthrough but I know a lot of people have been asking and waiting so here goes.
Put simply , Cococabana Grill Briketts are not going to be in stock in Europe for the start of the 2021 season.
In the first instance we can directly put the finger on Covid but in India where we produce that storm was quickly weathered and we are all guns firing on production. But a secondary affect has manifested itself , that being shipping logistics coming out of Asia in general but specifically India . All West coast India shipments currently run through Colombo , Sri Lanka as a huge transshipment terminal and then transferred to large container vessels running the China / Europe /E coast USA corridor . When India reopened its ports in October Colombo was closed for 2 weeks due to the staff being tested 50% Covid +, resulting in up to 75,000 full transit containers being backed up in the Indian Ocean Basin . Colombo hasn’t fully recovered from that but what recovery was possible was too late for on time delivery for Xmas so that set off a new problem- finding storage for those full containers of intended Christmas presents , to this day not fully solved . This has now resulted in an acute shortage of containers across Asia triggering an exponential rise in costs. We have 300 tonnes of charcoal briquettes sitting in India awaiting container allocation and whilst this is now starting to happen it isn’t going to be in time for the good weather arriving in Europe . And now on top of all of that a seriously large container vessel from China is now wedged across the Suez Canal , will possibly be that way a couple of weeks and the backlog is growing by 50 ships a day. That was the last straw for me , for us .
We are going to have to take a step back and watch enviously from afar.

Absolutely for sure we will be back and will keep you informed as soon as we know stock will be available. And as and when the Competition circuit reopens and travel is allowed you can expect to see my ugly mug sipping a dram or two with ya’s.

Now for what many of you will see as an unprecedented request. Our mission has always been to displace as much wood charcoal as is possible and especially that which is uncertified and is imported from African and S American countries. By buying Cococabana you were helping achieve that, indeed I believe we are responsible for quite a wave of non wood entries to the market . You can judge for yourself the quality , some are good especially virgin coconut shell and some unfortunately lower the bar on performance . I know some of you tried other non wood brands and came back to us , for that we thank you.
So while we are not able to get our product to you we recommend you use :
- Non wood varieties that frankly you have to pay a little bit more for - meaning if its cheaply priced it most likely is for a reason.* I know what goes into making a good briquette from technique to materials .
- Buy local meaning Buy British / German ! There’s certainly not enough to go around but there are some high quality artisanal charcoal producers that coppice their own managed lands. This is as environmentally friendly as it gets outside of what we do through parallel renewable energy production. It means paying more but I believe you get value and peace of mind.

So in the words of Big Arnie - I’ll be Back but in the meantime Keep em Glowing , Stay safe and healthy and above all have fun !

*if anyone is puzzled by my statement concerning differing qualities of coconut shell charcoal they can PM me and I’ll happily discuss the differences to look out for.
Likewise if anyone has any questions I’m happy to answer them.

Regards Paul

What a year !!! Unbelievable how this year has turned out . Our thoughts are with those that haven’t made it through, who’s businesses and livelihoods were decimated and who’s loved ones lived and continue to live with fear.
At Cococabana we have been forced to hunker down and keep the lightest of feet on the pedal . In India , where medical support is a world apart , but not necessarily worse than what we are used to , our production facility was forced to close 3 times and until today suffers random closures if that’s what’s felt is best to protect against virus spreading. Logistics in and out of Asia are at a standstill but we soldier on. All around us are stories that we are lucky don’t affect us directly so to arrive at this juncture with our health and well being in tact is a blessing for which we give thanks.

We are looking forward to 2021 and beyond . It’s important for us that our work gets done , that non wood charcoal finds its place in the BBQ world and we think we are having an impact . We will not stop innovating new products that ‘ one BBQ at a time ‘ help save the rainforests from further destruction .

Thank you so much for trusting our products , following our instincts and all the kind words of support you have showered us with this last year.

As this year draws to a close we would like to wish all of our customers a very Merry Xmas and above all a Healthy 2021 and beyond .

Stay Safe fellow Grillers !

Statement concerning Monkey Labour.

A few people have asked me about how we harvest coconut shells for our briquettes .
This BBC report is from 4 months ago and relates to UK supermarkets but there are UK media reports in the last 24 hours confirming Costco’a concerns and action.
The articles all focus on lifestyle products such as oil, butter, milk and water as consumables and their subsequent use in cosmetics. But the end life of the spent shell is where the charcoal industry becomes involved , so it stands to reason shells could also be labelled as being harvested by monkeys .

We DO NOT under any circumstances use Monkey labour.

Our shells are procured locally from farmers we work with and support . Almost all are harvested using long bamboo sticks with machetes attached. Long ladders are also deployed but this is a dwindling practice.

Most supermarkets stocking coconut shell charcoal will not have made the connection between consumables and charcoal , nor indeed the many other products containing Activated carbon, where Coconut shell is the GoTo raw material and SE Asia is collectively the biggest supplier.

Again to reiterate we DO NOT and will not use monkey labour.

Have a great start to the week.

Early start for a VIP delivery !

Very pleased to be supporting Charcoal Street BBQ Ev. for this Event. Of course Covid adjusted and all precautions being taken but nonetheless a fantastic day lays ahead.
A COVID restricted 400 homeless and less fortunate people being catered for from 13:00 at the Hannover 96 Stadium.
A truly great and much needed concept.
Even the weather looks like blessing the day 🌞!

When you are finally allowed to even think about a small street BBQ the Orga Team has to get together over a couple of cold beers and the obligatory Flank Steak Sarnie ! On the Christian Muenz Feuerplatte it’s made so easy- outer Edge to seal and bring to temp then a quick blast of Vesuvius to complete the show.
Dressed with mixed roasted peppers, onion relish melted Irish cheddar and the obligatory 3 rashers of bacon !
Toasted Bun to make it feel at home .
Cococabana Grill Briketts for heat , hazelnut logs for smoke and candy.
