Verena Kerfin Gallery presents GAZA by Matthew Collings and GAZA, again by Ondrej Drescher at the European Parliament in Brussels.

In his portraits, Matthew Collings commemorates Palestinian poets, artists, writers, journalists, and witnesses — the murdered, the deceased, and the living: Mosab Abu Toha, Mohammed Sami Qariqa, Nour al-Din Hajjaj, Saleem Al-Naffar, Refaat Al-Areer, Hala Alyan, Fatima Hassouna, Fadwa Tuqan, Hiba Kamal Abu Nada, and Heba Zagout.

In his paintings, Ondrej Drescher confronts the unrestrained, cold-blooded killing of children in Gaza — and the mirror image of a West that speaks of morality and humanitarian obligations while prettifying its own hideous face in front of the mirror.

The exhibition at the European Parliament will sadly not be able to save the life of any child in Gaza, any artist, any mother, or any father. But for five days, it can hold before the eyes of those responsible for Western propaganda, those responsible for arms exports to Israel, and the “moral” supporters in Parliament the blood and death they cause and support.

Today, Verena Kerfin Gallery opened the exhibition “GAZA” at the European Parliament in Brussels, bringing together works by Matthew Collings and Ondrej Drescher.

Hosted at the invitation of Fabio De Masi, Member of the European Parliament, the exhibition is on view from May 4 to 8, 2026, in the Altiero Spinelli Building, 3G Bar Area.

Today’s opening included contributions by Randa Far, Third Secretary at the Mission of Palestine to the EU, special guest Prof. Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University, and Prof. Dr. Jan-Peter Warnke, MEP and neurosurgeon, who spoke about his efforts to facilitate the import of medical goods into Gaza.

“GAZA” brings together portraits of Palestinian cultural figures and works that confront the human toll and the public rhetoric surrounding the war in Gaza. Shown inside the European Parliament, these works insist on visibility where political language too often abstracts human suffering.

I am grateful to Fabio De Masi and his team for making this presentation possible, and to all speakers and guests who joined us today.

The exhibition remains on view until May 8, 2026.

A man lies after using fentanyl/tranq in an area ruled by drug dealers. The street is also lined with battered older row homes inhabited by economically struggling families who must bear witness to the devastation caused by addiction. As well, drugs and associated gun violence and assaults are a daily occurrence on this street. Many addicts are injured or killed by motorists who don’t see them when they pass out on the street.

Noah
1804 E Clearfield St, Kensington, Philadelphia, USA, 2021.
Noah on Clearfield Street — Noah sits in his wheelchair on Clearfield Street near Kensington Avenue. Many people congregate in this spot to use drugs. Some are longtime friends on the street; others keep to themselves but still want to be in a place surrounded by other people in a similar life circumstance. After using fentanyl/“tranq,” many are in a state of complete vulnerability, unable to rouse, and can remain in the same position for hours after injecting. Noah remained on the street for a few additional months after this photo was taken. He entered an area hospital around December 2023. Noah went into rehab and wound up leaving the street behind. He did not use fentanyl for a year, had a job, planned on attending college. But he lost his job, and had difficulty finding another one. Because of his past as a user with an arrest record, employers are reluctant to hire. Noah wound up using opioids again, and was immediately kicked out of his sober living house. He wound up back in Kensington where he became very sick. Noah passed away in Philadelphia on Saturday, February 14, 2026 from end stage kidney failure as a result of the damage caused by fentanyl/xylazine.

I made it downtown, making a few obligatory street pictures just for the practice. I was uncomfortable and angry and couldn’t manage a decent image. Finding myself on Elizabeth Street, I entered the sculpture garden that I had not visited in nearly two years. In every corner of the garden I saw women—young, middle-aged, elderly. Sunbathing, many swapping hardcover books for iPhones, an unusual sight and a subtle signal that I was in an uncommon space. Some were lost in conversation. I imagine what they are saying, intent on issues I can’t guess at—exchanges private and consuming—sometimes smiling, sometimes thoughtful. A sense of order and tranquility: best friends on a weekday meeting in New York City. Unwritten rules, unspoken but clear. No smoking, all dogs on leash, no music or loud talking, a mutual respect without need for enforcement. A safe space for women.
