We love how they show just how thin the veil is that hides the exploitative and unsustainable practices that make fashion cheap. Yet for most of us, that’s enough plausible deniability to allow us to keep shopping with not a care in the world. Just !

!Trigger Warning!

Indeed, our source below puts the number closer to 300.000 between 1995 and 2012 alone. (p. 12) So what is driving this horrendous statistic?

The key factor appears to be debt. There are of course a multitude of factors involved in such a massive and complex issue, but the general consensus is that debt has lead enormous numbers of farmers to committing su***de.

Please do not continue reading if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts. If you or anyone you know is, please call a su***de prevention line.

- a thought experiment -

From the perspective of people counting on savings, insurances and a strong welfare system, this may seem baffling. So try to put yourself in the shoes of someone who cannot rely on these. Then, imagine you are a cotton farmer, with your income depending entirely on the cotton you harvest each year. You have amounted some debt due to the extremely low prices of cotton, but you reckon things are still alright.

Then, within a few weeks, some unexpectedly heavy rainfalls change everything. Your harvest is destroyed, you only reap about 10% of what you would have harvested originally - barely enough to pay the interest on your loans. You will not have an income for the next twelve months, with no safety net. So you will have to take on more debt to survive.

Much worse, you have to take on more debt still, in order to pay for seeds, equipment and workforce. Else, you won´t have a harvest next year either. So you secure a big enough loan and prepare to spend the next 30 years of your life, struggling to pay it off.

Fast forward, one year later.

Those rains have come again. Your hopes of paying off your debt within your life time have been crushed. After laying in bed for a week, you muster the courage to go out and try and secure a loan.

You don't get another loan.

Of course, Indian cotton farmers are not the only ones suffering from this issue. According to some sources, they may be no more likely to commit su***de than the average Indian. But this only means that far too many people are committing su***de due to extreme debt!

The fashion and textile industries are no exception. It is time to reform.

What are your thoughts on the issue of su***de in the fashion industry, and due to debt in general? If you like, please share them with us, by DM or comment.

As a result, they have to skip meals and eat inadequately, or accumulate debt, which may result in them becoming modern slaves.

Doubtless, nobody reading this would disagree that this is wrong.

More than that, it is unnecessary. In most cases, a minimal price increase would be sufficient to double workers' pay, without hurting consumers in Europe.

Big bonuses and staunch price competition are to blame. As consumers, we need to be aware of this and try to opt for brands advocating more reasonable working conditions. Your receipt is your ballot.

Likewise, politicians must hold companies accountable for their supply chains. Without policies to back them up, consumers' preferences will never be met with more than the bare minimum, no matter how righteous the cause.

That is not just amazing, it is also good for the environment. How?

The páramo, the alpaca’s natural habitat, is a sensitive ecosystem. Its surface is covered in dense, low-growing vegitation, unique to this special environment.

The plant-covered surface forms a sponge that transfers humidity to the soil, spreading water through the surrounding areas. Indeed, cities in many countries, most notably Colombia, depend on the páramos for their drinking water.

Lately, páramos have suffered from human impact. Cows, for instance, clobber the surfaces with their hooves, destroying the precious vegetation. This is becoming a problem, as the surface looses its sponge-like qualities, thus providing less and less fresh water to its surroundings.

By countrast, the gentle alpacas elegantly trod across the surface without damaging it, thanks to their padded feet and finer nails. In addition, alpacas are very calm animals. They do not move much while grasing, emphasizing this harmonious relationship with their habitat.
