Sleeper Studio
Sleeper is a publishing project working with photography, design, and text to realize artists’ ideas in printed form. While books will always be a core part of our output, we identify more as a studio than strictly as a publisher. In this form, we can cultivate a fluid and experimental practice that is more concerned with bringing certain ideas to life than it is about producing a particular kind of object.

Ben Alper
Ben Alper is an artist, photographer, and publisher based in Carrboro, North Carolina. His work has been exhibited and published both nationally and internationally. Since 2015, he has released six artist books. Adrift, A Series of Occurrences, Compound Fractures and Hands On were all released under his imprint Flat Space Books; More recently, Hiding In Plain Sight - a collaborative project with Stanely Wolukau-Wanambwa - was published by the Harun Farocki Institut as part of their pamphlet series.

Ben is also ½ of Sleeper Studio and the co-founder of A New Nothing, an online project dedicated to hosting visual conversations between artists.

"While browsing through magazines, jumping from one topic to another, from one year to the next, Marc Nagtzaam found an extensive
range of material to start working with. Nagtzaam, whose artistic production has been dedicated for years to drawings, carefully observed the magazines and newspapers, focusing on all their details, printed and unchanged after more than a half-century. His attention to marks and traces on these physical objects made me reflect on the lack of contemporary practices of cataloging our culture and its transformation." from Anya Jasbar's text Present

For this publication Nagtzaam made compositions with frames, lines, dots, bars, scribbles, numbers, and pictures, all scanned from magazines and books in the library of the Laimun artist-in-residence program in Sardinia (Italy). With an accompanying text by Anya Jasbar. Design: Marc Nagtzaam & Roger Willems.

Laimun, in collaboration with Ahorn Books, presents "La Ripetizione," an exhibition with works by Chris Rocchegiani and Anya Jasbar, hosted at Projektraum 145, Invalidenstr. 145, 10115 Berlin.

December 4-19, 2021
P145, Invalidenstr. 145, 10115 Berlin
Thu-Sun, 2-7 p.m.

LA RIPETIZIONE is a study on memory and time, a reflection on women’s conditions and the patterns of their productive and generative roles in western societies.

Between 2020 and 2021, Chris Rocchegiani and Anya Jasbar started a remote conversation shaped by the periodical exchange of books and archival material, which led to a new body of work for both artists.

With her oil paintings, Chris Rocchegiani creates a world of color, symbols, and imaginary creatures where personal memories and gestures are intertwined and expressively alive.

Anya Jasbar, with her mixed media compositions, retraces the life and education of a working woman, combining elements of fiction with historical and public documents on women’s labor and training from the early 20th century until the 1980s.

The project is co-curated with Daniel Augschöll.

If you're in Berlin, It would be great to see you Projektraum145 and start a conversation around the topics of photography, art, and the archive. This project is, in fact, the result of a 1-year intense exchange between Anya Jasbar and Chris Rocchegiani, using materials collected and archived at Ahorn/Laimun's library.
