Once a historic fortress, now a luxury hotel on the Montenegrin coast: Mamula Island combines history and design with an authentic island feel.

The Mamula Island hotel is located in Montenegro on a small, circular island in the Bay of Kotor. The fortress dates back to the 19th century and was built for military purposes by the Austro-Hungarian General Lazar Mamula. In 2015, it was leased from the Montenegrin government for 49 years by the Swiss-based Orascom Development Holding and, over several years of construction, transformed into a unique hotel that impressively blends history, nature, and modern design.

In 2025, operations were transferred to Banyan Tree as their first European project, who will undertake a refurbishment of the hotel in 2026. Many consider Hapag Llyod not only to be a pioneer of luxury cruises, but also the inventor of this form of travel.
