A plastic pink flamingo in the middle of the Arctic — absurd and beautiful! The meme flamingo drifting among the ice — is it amusing or unsettling?
Boris Schaarschmidt’s photo series «NOT A LIFESAVING DEVICE» is an ironic look at climate change, tourism, and the intrusion of the foreign into fragile ecosystems. The title comes from the words the manufacturer printed right on the toy, and it works as a metaphor for naive attempts to save the world.
Although the images look AI-generated, this is not AI and not even digital manipulation. Boris took these photos during his boat journey through the Arctic.
