Dear book lovers, indeed dear everyone, please, please minimize social contact to contain the spread of this virus. Germany now has over 10,000 confirmed cases. Two days ago it was 4000. While there have been relatively few deaths, every one of them is tragic. If there are relatively few, it probably has a lot to do with the fact that the German health care system can still cope with the numbers needing hospitalization and intensive care. Confirmed cases are doubling every few days - if the virus is not contained, the health system will come under impossible strain. If you want to know what that looks like, look at Italy. Now, as of today, additional sensible restrictions have been placed on social contact. Most shops are now no longer allowed to open in Berlin. Some types of shop can remain open. In some cases - as with supermarkets and chemists - this makes sense. In others, it really doesn't. One of the spared categories is bookshops. I would normally delight in any measure that advanced the cause of bookshops, but I would not dream of opening the Berlin Book Nook now. It is simply impossible to guarantee the 2m distance between customers that all people are advised to maintain from each other - indeed with more than two or three customers in the shop, I could pretty much guarantee that the 2m minimum distance will be breached. People can carry this virus without any symptoms and be infectious. I just don't understand what is not to get here. If you get too close to others, whether you or they seem ill or not, you risk infecting them or becoming infected. It seems absolutely straightforward that we should not be going to cafes or restaurants or cosy little bookshops right now, and should be limiting our trips to food shops. It is depressing to see how much evidence there is of people not taking this thing seriously. Please, please be responsible and avoid contact with others as much as possible. Please also wash or disinfect your hands regularly - the virus can survive on surfaces for hours or even days.
