Maria Silvano and I have known each other for many years, our paths crossing through different parts of our lives here in Berlin.
I’ve followed her artistic practice for a long time, particularly her work as a photographer. Over the past year, she started sharing with me something completely new: a project made entirely through embroidery.
Inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, Maria began translating its ancient visual language into the very contemporary landscape of Berlin, more specifically, into the everyday theatre of its underground. Nine embroidered pieces, one for each of Berlin’s nine U-Bahn lines.
I loved the idea from the very beginning.
There is something about the encounter between these different worlds that I find incredibly fascinating: an ancient reference and an old, patient craft used to capture contemporary urban life. The slowness of embroidery against the speed and chaos of the city. The quiet concentration of making, stitch by stitch, against the constant movement of the U-Bahn.
So when I saw U-EPIC taking shape, I knew I wanted to see these works at Amodo.
I’m very happy that on September 10, during Berlin Art Week, our little space will become their home for a while and that we’ll finally be able to share them with you.
