French Art Deco lidded box in black Hyalith glass, c. 1930s.

A silver-coloured geometric grid gives the rounded body a clear Art Deco order. The spherical finial completes its compact silhouette.

Ebony three-figure sculpture, Tanzania, c. 1960s-70s.

Attributed to the Makonde carving tradition, the sculpture places three elongated figures around a smooth sphere. Most of its volume and weight sit above the narrow figures and the open spaces between them.

Studio ceramic vase by Elly and Wilhelm Kuch, Germany, 1960s.

Full shoulders and a narrow neck give the vase strong volume and weight. Abstract black and charcoal markings change with every turn, in contrast with the clear silhouette.

Pair of turned ebony candleholders, Africa, mid-20th century.

Rounded volumes are stacked along narrow stems, giving the pair a clear architectural order. Their repetition creates a strong vertical rhythm, reinforced by the weight of the ebony.

Japanese crystalline-glaze vase by Tachikichi, Kyoto, late 20th century.

Flower-like crystals grow within the glaze during controlled kiln cooling rather than being applied as a pattern, making the surface unique to each vase. The crystalline surface shifts in colour with the angle, from warm ivory and ch*****ne to pale lilac and blue-grey. The low, rounded body gives the vase full volume and a strong sense of weight.

Brutalist two-light bronze candleholder attributed to Kunstschmiede Bergmeister, Germany, c. 1960s-70s.

The two candle dishes extend from a low asymmetrical body. Open space beneath the centre gives the compact form a clear architectural structure.
