The name "Café Lehmitz Photobooks" is my hommage to swedish photographer and living legend, Anders Petersen. I met him 1st in March 2008 when he received the Dr.-Erich-Salomon-Prize 2008 at the Nordic Embassies, Berlin. Since this time I followed his work and re-found a very small book in my shelf, a small pocket book, called "Café Lehmitz" I bought in the early 80ties without knowing that I bought no book with pictures but a photobook, my first photobook. In 2008 I bought my hard copy, signed by Anders, many thanks... now!

Having stayed in Cologne this year for family reasons, I wish everyone involved in Les Rencontres d'Arles 2026—publishers, artists, and photobook collectors alike—a wonderful time in Arles.
I am currently revamping my online presence due to an influx of bots and spam attacks. "Cafe Lehmitz Photobooks" is evolving: the site will soon become "Cafe Lehmitz Photobooks – Time for Photobooks"—a dedicated space for photobook collecting, featuring curated information on topics of interest to collectors as well as selected book recommendations.
For the time being, you can reserve and order books via my email address or this page while the new integrated webstore is being finalized. Thank you for your patience.
Warm regards,
Richard G. Sporleder, Café Lehmitz Photobooks, Cologne

My Black Week Book #4: Anders PETERSEN - Rome (with print)
https://www.cafelehmitz-photobooks.com/en/petersen-anders-rome-koenig-collectors-edition.html
This special edition of the photo book 'Rome' contains a pigment print in the size 20 x 29 cm, dated and signed on the back. The limitation to under 150 copies also makes them so interesting.

"The photo book 'Rome' contains black-and-white illustrations from the years 1984, 2005 and 2012.
The photographer has been dealing with Rome since the mid-1980s and has returned there several times since then. The selection of photos in the photo book 'Rome' goes back to the present day and thus reflects the development of the city.
With his unique, personal approach, Anders PETERSEN captures the soul of Rome and its inhabitants. 'Rome' is rounded off with the text 'Rome's fever. The Temperature of Petersen's Code ', written by Marc Delogu." (publisher's note, © Walther Koenig, 2014)

My Black Week Book #3: William EGGLESTON - Polaroid SX-70
https://www.cafelehmitz-photobooks.com/en/eggleston-william-polaroid-sx-70.html
The facsimile 'Polaroid SX-70' of the famous photographer William EGGLESTON contains the only photos he took in this medium - in the original hand they were mounted by hand in a black leather album. They are rare records of his walks and rides with the Polaroid SX-70 (the now cult camera produced between 1972 and 1981). 'Polaroid SX-70' is the first publication of Wiliam EGGLESTON’s Polaroids and show his ironic sense for sequencing photos in book form.
The gloriously mundane subjects of these photos—a Mississippi street sign, a telephone book, stacked crates of empty soda bottles—is familiar Eggleston territory, but fascinatingly all of these Polaroids were taken outdoors." My Black Week Book #1: Aitor ORTIZ - Gaudi, Impresiones Intimas
(leicht angepasster Verlagtstext, © Hartmann Project)

Hannah KOZAK - he threw the last punch too hard

Some pics from Arles. COSMOS Bookmarket #4: This morning Miki HASEGAWA came to COSMOS to bring me her exciting publication 'Internal Notebook', published by Ceiba in an edition of only 500 copies. You can find your signed copy at Cafe Lehmitz Photobooks table at COSMOS Bookmarklet, Bodega, La Muleta, 2 rue de la Paix, F-13200 Arles

Book description:
"Miki HASEGAWA developed her dummy book titled 'Quiet…' to later become the photobook “Internal Notebook” in the workshop “Photo Book Masterclass” in 2015 given by the Dutch book designers Teun van der Heijden and Sandra van der Doelen, and Yumi Goto, the director of Reminders Photography Stronghold.
After the workshop, Miki had further improved the book under the mentorship of Yumi, published limited edition of 66, and held a book launch exhibition at RPS.
After the 66 editions were sold out, her dummy won special mention at 'Photobook 2017', a part of an international photo festival Photolux in Lucca, Italy.
This award led this dummy to be published as trader’s edition of 500 copies with the collaboration with an Italian publisher Cieba editions.
The cover design and binding technique have been renewed, and part of the images has been re-edited.
It is now bilingual, Japanese and English. CEIBA edition photobook is a faithful reproduction of original photobook by Miki.

With her own anxiety that she could have abused her daughter, Miki HASEGAWA started her research on child abuse cases.
HASEGAWA interviewed the child abuse victims, photographed their portraits, and collected and edited materials that summon up their childhood memories such as their diaries, notebooks, and photos.
This project 'Internal Notebook' is her attempt to visualize the invisible sufferings and traumas of the abused children from her own perspective as a mother and a possible child abuser.

Internal Notebook
In March 2016, the Japanese Academy of Pediatrics announced that they estimated 350 children across the country died due to abuse. According to the Ministry of Health, Education, and Welfare’s tally, roughly 90 children per year die due to abuse, including forced double su***de. So 260 children’s deaths are being overlooked.

This girl, who experienced violence and abusive speech in the home from the age of 3, is suffering hearing loss as an aftereffect. This boy’s younger brother was killed by their father when he was five, and he continued to suffer physical abuse after that. When this girl was in the second grade, she was left to live alone with only a 10000-Yen note, with no water or electricity supply, and she personally requested help from Child Services.
The men and women who I met told me: 'I wasn’t left with any large, visible scars or bruises. The physical violence and abusive language I experienced for many years, the mental control, the sexual abuse, the negation of my individuality, and the neglect, aren’t visible, but they leave major scars which don’t go away. It’s hard to take, but other people can’t see this pain.' They suffer depression, self-harm, dissociation, panic attacks, PTSD, and other ailments, but one cannot see these injuries unless one actively looks for them. And they have written in notebooks about their hard-to-understand emotional pain.
The 'Internal Notebook' is a notebook of the emotional cries of children raised in abusive homes. I have taken portraits of them, along with the diaries and notebooks they have kept.
I have also tried to show what their parents were like by arranging their childhood photographs and important possessions that evoke memories of those days. It seemed to me that their parents were no different from the rest of us in thinking that we were normal parents.
The people in this book do not only feel hatred and resentment toward their parents. There are those who feel anger at themselves, unchangeable sadness, and even question whether they must forgive their parents as they desperately keep themselves alive. So we can see that the ones who tormented them were not just their parents but other adults in society as well." ( Ceiba Editions, 2019)
