Larive International linkedin Samaki Poa | Building the foundations for the future of aquaculture in East Africa
Four years ago, we asked a simple question: what would it take to genuinely empower fish farmers in East Africa, not just with funding, but with knowledge, skills, and a connected value chain?
Today, Samaki Poa, meaning "awesome fish" in Kiswahili, is answering that question at scale.
Together with our consortium partners Blue Planet AS, Lattice, and Skretting, and with the support of Norad - Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation, we have been building something lasting.
Here's what we're proud of so far:
✅ 13,000+ registered users on HowtodoAquaculture.com, now the largest free digital aquaculture learning platform in Africa.
✅ 17+ courses and 150+ videos available in English and Kiswahili, reaching learners from over 35 African countries.
✅ 2,700+ farmers trained through hands-on vocational programmes in Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda.
✅ Targeted inclusion of women and youth throughout the capacity-building programme.
This is what Public-Private Partnership looks like when it works: shared expertise, local ownership, and measurable impact.
But the work isn't done. East Africa's aquaculture sector holds enormous potential, and realising it will take continued investment, collaboration, and commitment from industry, investors, and development partners alike.
👉 We'd love to hear from you: What do you see as the most important next step to unlock the sector's full potential? And how can your organisation contribute to the future of aquaculture in East Africa?
