My top ten books of the year!
•
It was hard to choose (I read a lot of excellent books), but these ones had to be the best.
•
I think the most surprising 5 star was Chelsea Handler’s Life Will Be The Death of Me - I’ve always enjoyed her work, but this one was so introspective & filled with wisdom - I really loved it.
•
There were some amazing non fiction reads this year - I look forward to reading more bell hooks & Ijeoma Oluo.
•
Overall a real mix - some YA, thrillers, non fiction, short stories, romance & contemporary! A great year for books.
•

Hi! It’s been forever. How is everyone?
How great is this colour coordinated bookshelf at my friend’s house?!

The last few months just seem to have disappeared - there has been a lot going on. I have plenty of book recommendations for you from the last few months that I will share soon.

Another holiday read that I received as a birthday gift! ✨
This was such a unique book. It’s not a light read, but it is a fascinating story of life in very northern Norway in the 1600s, where burning witches & deep prejudice against the indigenous Sámi people were everyday occurrences.
•
It starts with the real life event of a storm that suddenly kills all the men in a coastal village. From that point, the women are left to fend for themselves & become independent, at least until a commissioner is sent to sort the village out.
•
It is an unsettling read, but still the relationship between the women & particularly between Maren & Ursa, the two women the book focuses on, are well woven & hopeful.

One of my holiday reads 💫
I love Gabrielle Zevin’s writing & included one of her books, Young Jane Young, in the Baby Feminist book box!
This was one of her books I hadn’t read yet, and I loved it too!
It’s split into a few parts, but we start with the narrator, husband of Maggie, telling the story of how he met Maggie & her extremely interesting & quirky life. I loved the themes & the idea that we are many different versions of ourselves throughout life. I also loved the homage to the name Margaret (my own!) and all the different names that can come from it. It’s a short book & a lot of fun!

Definitely worth a read ⚡️

Oh wow, what a gorgeous book.

I wasn’t entirely sure on reading this one to begin with, as books based in Shakespearean times (or really any time where there was no access to showers) don’t tend to appeal to me, but after seeing many great reviews, telling me I had to read it and then joining a buddy read for it - well I had to!

It did not disappoint. You are told upfront that Hamnet, the titular character, will die - and although the story starts the week of his death, we go back and forth in time to learn about his parents, their parents, his sisters, amongst others. The writing is beautiful, easy to read and completely absorbing. The characters are written with such depth and the story woven so well. I absolutely adored the character of Agnes, and how she interacted with people who she confused by being a completely unique person.
You should definitely read this book!

I know I just got an amazing pile of books as gifts, but I still couldn’t help myself buying more 😩 these two have been on my wish list for a while!

A small detour from book posts today - I might not have mentioned it (😂) but I turned 30, celebrated a lot, wore this glorious jumpsuit & gave Donald lots of cuddles✨
