"Rejoice greatly!", lovers of Baroque music, for the annual Händel-Festspiele (Handel Festival) opens this Friday in George Frideric Handel’s birthplace of Halle, Germany! 🎊 A towering figure in the world of composition, here are a few facts to know about the man whom Beethoven called "the master of us all":
️⃣ Born in Germany in 1685 as Georg Friederich Händel, he later moved to London and composed masterpieces like the "Messiah", "Water Music", and "Music for the Royal Fireworks". 🎶 As the appointed composer for King George I's Chapel Royal, he became a British subject under the "Handel's Naturalisation Act" of 1727. 🇬🇧
️⃣ Handel's most famous work "Messiah" was initially controversial and considered blasphemous in Britain for its use of gospel quotations in a theatrical setting. 😯
️⃣ His coronation anthem, "Zadok the Priest", has been performed at every British coronation since 1727, although modern audiences may rather recognise it as the source of inspiration for the UEFA Champions League anthem. 👑⚽
️⃣ To commemorate the centenary of his death, a monument in his honour was unveiled in his birthplace of Halle in 1859, funded in part by the British Royal Family. 🏛️👸
️⃣ Unlike many composers, Handel died rich and famous, buried in Westminster Abbey with full state honors and over three thousand mourners. ⛪⚰️ His fame even left an important mark in the world of literature: John Mainwaring’s “Memoirs of the Life of the Late George Frederic Handel” is said to be the first full length biography of any composer. 📜
