Some bespoke requests ask us to build something visible.
This one asked for the opposite: a compartment no one would ever see, built to hold a signature from Eve Fleming, Ian Fleming's mother, found inside a rare first edition by the pencil's owner.

Getting that right meant reworking the POCKETPENCIL from the inside, a hidden chamber closing without a seam.
We built the body from 333 gold, plated in 999, a quiet nod to the gold typewriter Fleming himself used.

Before it was anything else, the Pocketmaster was ELBWOOD's first form, the model everything else grew from.

This special edition returns to it in its purest state: barrel, cap, and grip section cut entirely from The Penmaker's Atelier ebonite, the material Frank developed himself in Hitzacker.
It's the lightest instrument in the edition, small enough to disappear into a pocket, yet balanced enough to hold securely once the cap is posted. The exposed grip zone carries its knurled texture, cut precisely for control.

Limited to 48 pieces a year.

The Penmaker's Atelier is an ebonite Frank Pressentin developed himself, in cooperation with the Schönberger Ebonite Manufaktur in Hitzacker, directly on the Elbe.

The raw material is vulcanized over several days under high pressure and heat, then ground down until its color, composition, and grain become visible.

From this ebonite, Frank made LONGCAP, SHORTCAP, and POCKETMASTER in his own atelier in Hamburg.

Each piece is limited and referenced: 24 Longcap, 24 Shortcap, 48 Pocketmaster, all made in 2026.

PENMAKER'S ATELIER - Special Edition

Before this SHORTCAP could take shape, the material itself had to be made.
Frank developed this ebonite together with the Schönberger Ebonite Manufaktur. A process that takes days, as the raw compound cures under heat and pressure until it's finally solid enough to work.

Even then, its true character stays hidden until the surface is ground away, layer by layer, revealing color and grain that couldn't be predicted beforehand.

What this Deep Insight shows is the final chapter of that story: the moment this material, made specifically for ELBWOOD, becomes a SHORTCAP — one of 24, part of "The Penmaker's Atelier."

Thuja burl doesn't grow straight, and it doesn't grow the same way twice.
Every piece of it carries its own history in the grain, long before it reaches the atelier.

There's no music on this one. I wanted you to hear what I hear in the atelier while making this.

The BORGES pen started as a box of old gaucho knives, each one carrying its own wear, its own history, before any of it became a pen.
Turning that into something new took longer than most commissions.
