A follow up on my recent reel which I want you to hear the isolated Bass Track. Here we can hear what’s actually happening underneath the mix.🎧

One thing I’ve always believed is that the bass doesn’t have to sit on top of the music just to be heard. It should have its own space while still becoming part of the record and gluing everything together in the rhythm section.🎸🎶

For this Incognito bass cover, I wanted to show exactly that:

🎵 Bass within the full mix
🎸 Isolated bass track
🎵 Then back into the mix

For the tone, I’m using my Sadowsky MetroExpress 5-string through the Darkglass Electronics Anagram, running the Bass Hammer which based on the Aguilar Tone Hammer and the Pitbull Strings Mutant sets. 🎛️

Listen especially when the full track comes back in — after hearing the bass isolated, you can hear exactly where it lives within the arrangement.

A good bass tone isn’t only about how it sounds solo. It’s about how it serves the music.

Recently I got to try the Bass Hammer on the Darkglass Electronics Anagram which is their take on the awesome Aguilar Tone Hammer.🎛️👌

What better yet is to test it out on an Incognito tune. This band has been a life-changing influence for me ever since when a friend shared with me “still a friend of mine”. The moment I heard it, I said to myself “This is what I want to play!”

Coming from a nu-metal and hardcore world, Incognito made me do a 180 degree turn and opened me to the world of acid-jazz. That is that start of my exploration to other various kinds of jazz artists. Here’s a little jam on their awesome performance of 1993 from the Little Big Beat Studio session. This weekend will be a full video via my YouTube channel.

I’m using my trusty Sadowsky MetroExpress perfect for any Acid-Jazz tunes such as this plus trying out the Pitbull Strings Mutant sets as well.🎶👌

Another simple bass maintenance check that’s easy to forget…🔧

If you own a bolt-on bass, don’t forget about those four neck bolts at the back. Not applicable for neck-through construction.

Over time, it’s worth checking that everything is still properly secure. A solid neck-to-body connection is an important part of keeping your bass stable thus allowing the best resonance to come out from both the body and neck.

⚠️ Important: We’re checking — not trying to win a tightening competition so a word of caution! If they’re already snug, leave them alone. Overtightening can damage the screw holes, neck, or body. Just make sure all bolts has an even tension. It only takes a few seconds to check, and it’s one of those small things I include when going over an instrument. Do this check also at the screws of your bridge. The one that enables the contact from the bridge plate to the body of your bass.
