NEW ARRIVALS — TWO VERY DIFFERENT JOURNEYS INTO THE OCCULT

Two new titles have just arrived at Apep Books, and I’m particularly pleased to finally have both of them here.

First up:

A fascinating edition of a nineteenth-century magical manuscript associated with Frederick Hockley, presenting four experiments concerning the spirits Birto, Agares, Bealpharos and Vassago.

The volume combines Hockley’s original manuscript material with transcriptions and additional sources, offering a fascinating glimpse into the magical manuscript tradition surrounding these experiments.

The book sold out almost immediately after the publisher announced it. Fortunately, the publisher kindly reserved a small number of copies for Apep Books. Some were already claimed through my newsletter a few days ago, so these are the remaining copies.

I don’t expect them to last very long.

The weekly arrival is here.

I am pleased to announce that Clavis Artis, the latest publication from Black Letter Press, has now arrived at Apep Books and is ready to ship.

Clavis Artis — the “Key of the Art” — is one of the more enigmatic works of the Western alchemical tradition. Attributed to Zoroaster, though its true authorship remains unknown, the work survives in only a handful of copies. Its remarkable illustrated manuscripts are particularly known for their strange and vivid symbolic imagery, combining dragons, serpents, celestial bodies, animals and alchemical apparatus into a unique visual representation of the Great Work.

The text has remained largely inaccessible to modern readers and is surrounded by questions regarding its origins, authorship and symbolism. This new publication by Black Letter Press finally makes the work available to a wider audience in English.

Both editions have now arrived:

Announcing Liber Quattuor Experimentorum
(The Four Experiments from Frederick Hockley)
We're pleased to announce the publication of Liber Quattuor Experimentorum (The Four Experiments).
Liber Quattuor Experimentorum is a practical grimoire written to enable the adept to summon and communicate with the four spirits Birto, Agares, Bealpharos and Vassago.
Liber Quattuor Experimentorum (The Four Experiments) is based on the manuscript held in the Wellcome Collection (MS 2842)
For the first time, this manuscript has been published in its entirety.
The book contains a full-colour reproduction of Frederick Hockley's original handwritten manuscript, A verbatim transcription of the original text and a complete transcription in modern English with all missing text and imagery included in order to make this a fully workable grimoire, making this the most complete edition of the manuscript published to date.
Also included are studies of the four spirits, examining their origins and development, together with a history of the Four Experiments and the different versions found in related manuscripts.
The volume also includes the version of the Four Experiments contained in Wellcome MS 3203, Henry Dawson Lea's Five Treatises upon Magic, reproduced in full alongside a new transcription, with the illustrations redrawn for clarity.
The final section reproduces The Experiment of Bealphares from Reginald Scot's The Discoverie of Witchcraft, which appears to preserve the source material from which the Bealpharos experiment later developed.
This has been a long-term project, and I'm pleased to finally make this important manuscript available in a complete and accessible edition.
