my fascination with vintage fashion and any kind of antiques began when I was just a young girl. Grown up with a highly fashionable mother and an antiques collecting father I spent almost more time in fashion ateliers and on antique markets than on the playground. I remember as a young woman wearing a little black dress from the early 1960s for a cocktail and how elegant and special I felt. These days the idea of starting a business for antiques and vintage fashion sometime later began to grow in my mind. Time passed, careers changed, but my obsession of vintage fashion and pre-loved objects became stronger with every passing year. And my dream came true! Welcome to Oh! The moment when fashion history steps off the page and into reality. ✨

After introducing this extraordinary ESCADA creation by Margaretha Ley – first in its entirety, then through its intricate details and construction – it is time to open the archive.

The original ESCADA look book, Edition 23: Autumn/Winter 1990, records the collection as it was presented at the time.

First, Yasmeen Ghauri appears wearing the very jacket from this ensemble – followed by the surviving piece itself.

The gown shown next is a different version of the same design, presented by Claudia Schiffer. This is followed by the gown from my ensemble – the magnificent black velvet and floral gold brocade version.

For me, this is one of the great pleasures of collecting historic fashion: seeing an image from a period publication and then encountering the garment itself, preserved decades later.

Margaretha Ley’s ESCADA at its most opulent – velvet, brocade, soutache embroidery, rhinestones and extraordinary construction, capturing the maximalist spirit of the turn of the 1990s.

And as the look book closes, so does this chapter of the pieces’ journey at Oh! Jackie.

I am delighted that these exceptional garments will now become part of a German fashion museum’s collection, where their craftsmanship, provenance and place in fashion history can be preserved and appreciated for generations to come. 🖤

A little lavender moment before the Black Tie magic begins… ✨

An extraordinary 1970s Emilio Pucci silk jersey maxi dress from my own collection, in the most beautiful shade of lavender, adorned with an exquisite Lily of the Valley print and those wonderfully fluid, utterly extraordinary handkerchief sleeves.

Light as a summer breeze and quintessentially Pucci – the perfect dress for a Mediterranean evening last weekend even with temperatures approaching 40°C.

And watch until the very end… a little sign of approval from an unexpected female admirer. 💜

A closer look at this remarkable Fall 1990 ESCADA ensemble by Margaretha Ley. 🖤✨

Following my previous Reel, I wanted to show you the details that make this Fall 1990 two-piece creation so exceptional – from the spectacular jacket and gown to the intricate embroidery and the remarkable construction of the skirt.

The first image offers a little glimpse into the story behind the piece: a photograph from the original Fall 1990 look book, showing the jacket, accompanied by the carefully preserved spare materials that came with the ensemble – reels of embroidery thread in various colours and spare rhinestones.

The gown itself is a masterpiece of construction: a voluminous full skirt combining black velvet and floral gold brocade, supported by a black stiff tulle underskirt and finished with a matching lining.

Every detail reflects the extravagant craftsmanship and unmistakable maximalism of ESCADA under Margaretha Ley at the height of its creative power.

And there is still more to discover…

The original look book documentation – including several pages featuring the very jacket and a version of the gown – deserves a post of its own.

Before this exceptional two-piece ensemble leaves Oh! Jackie for its new home in a renowned German fashion museum, I wanted to share it with you.

ESCADA by Margaretha Ley
Fall 1990

An outstanding black velvet evening gown and matching evening jacket, lavishly embroidered and jewelled – a spectacular example of Margaretha Ley’s vision at the absolute height of Escada.

This two-piece ensemble of velvet, brocade and opulent soutache embroidery represents the absolute heyday of Escada under Margaretha Ley. Pieces from this era, with their unmistakable maximalist aesthetic of the late 1980s and early 1990s, are highly prized by collectors and lovers of historic fashion.

The ensemble is documented in the original Fall 1990 look book – and in my next post, I’ll reveal the fascinating documentation that proves just how special this piece is. ✨

There are some words that never go out of fashion.

I came across this beautiful quote from Gabrielle Chanel in the September 2026 issue of Harper’s BAZAAR Germany, in Bryan Yambao’s insightful homage to ’s Chanel. Blazy, who has been Creative Director of the House since April 2025, took inspiration for his Fall 2026 ready-to-wear collection from these words Chanel once shared in an old Le Figaro Style interview.

“A fashion that is both a caterpillar and a butterfly…”

What a beautiful metaphor – and how remarkably true, then and now.

We all need our caterpillar moments: comfort, ease, practicality, the clothes that let us move through everyday life. And then there are the moments when we want to transform – to fly, to be seen, to seduce, to celebrate.

Perhaps that is what great fashion has always understood: we don’t have to choose between the two. We need both. 🦋

STAEBE-SEGER COUTURE

The couture dress from my previous two posts carries two labels: Staebe-Seger and Hörhager Laimböck Düsseldorf. And that little detail opens a fascinating window onto post-war German fashion.

Staebe-Seger, founded by Gerd Staebe and Hans Seger, was one of Berlin’s distinguished couture houses of the 1950s and early 1960s. Their salon on the Kurfürstendamm belonged to the elegant fashion world that helped re-establish Berlin as a city of style after the war.

Staebe-Seger’s designs were refined rather than flamboyant – beautifully cut dresses, sophisticated suits, sculptural coats and exquisite cocktail and evening gowns, distinguished by impeccable proportions, luxurious materials and precise workmanship.

They were also among the Berlin couturiers who presented their collections internationally, including in London and New York in the late 1950s, as Berlin sought to reclaim its place on the international fashion map.

But the story of this particular dress continues beyond Berlin.

The second label, Hörhager Laimböck, points to Düsseldorf and one of its historic fashion retailers. Founded in 1886, the house had a long-established presence on the Königsallee and served a sophisticated, fashion-conscious clientele. In the post-war decades, it was precisely the kind of prestigious retailer through which German couture reached its customers.

So these two small labels tell a much bigger story: a couture house in post-war Berlin and a prestigious fashion destination on Düsseldorf’s Königsallee, brought together in one garment.

For me, this is what makes vintage fashion so fascinating. A dress can preserve not only its designer’s vision, but also traces of the places, people and fashion culture through which it once travelled.

Not simply a dress. A little piece of German fashion history.

STAEBE-SEGER COUTURE · BERLIN

The reveal. 🖤

A breathtaking 1950s cocktail dress in black lace, where texture, structure and movement come together with extraordinary precision.

At first glance, it is the lace that draws you in – delicate yet remarkably sculptural. Beneath it, a brass-coloured lining glows softly through the black lace, giving the fabric an almost burnished warmth and making the intricate floral pattern of the lace come alive.

Look closer, and the construction unveals itself: the lace is backed with fine net tulle and arranged in graduated tiers, while two dramatic vertical bands of heavy, matte fabric, finely pleated from top to hem, frame the body and create a striking contrast in texture.

At the centre back hem, carefully placed godet pleats introduce an unexpected touch of movement, allowing the skirt to open and unfold beautifully as the wearer moves.

And then there is the craftsmanship.

Every seam is finished by hand. Every element is carefully placed and constructed – the soft lace, the brass-coloured lining, the pleated bands, the godets and the sculpted silhouette – creating the unmistakable precision of true couture.

Nearly seventy years later, it still feels remarkably modern on the body. The kind of dress that reminds us why couture is not simply about how a garment looks, but how beautifully it is made. ✨
