For Sabine Wolniczak, years of interest in craftwork led
to learning basketmaking
from renowned basket maker Joe Hogan in
Loch na Foey, Co. Galway in 1998;
this experience took her on a life-changing
journey, one which continues to this day.
The Irish Scoib is one of very few truly traditional
Irish baskets. Born out of limited resources and
a need for multifunctionality, the Scoib was used to
strain and serve potatoes -
once the mainstay of the Irish diet. After all had
been eaten, the basket was hit against an outside
wall and the hens or pigs got the “leavings”. It was
then washed and hung on a wooden peg.
