It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Manfried Dietrich on October 2nd, 2024. Prof. Dietrich was a distinguished Ugaritologist and a renowned scholar, known for his significant contributions to the study of ancient Near Eastern texts and cultures.

Born on November 6th, 1935, in Yüankiang, China, he spent his childhood there until the age of 13. After returning to Germany in 1949, he studied theology and Semitics at the University of Tübingen, earning his doctorate in 1958 with a dissertation titled "Untersuchungen zum mandäischen Wortschatz."

From 1959 to 1960, he studied medieval Hebrew linguistic history at the University of Oxford under Paul Kahle. In April 1963, he joined Wolfram von Soden at the University of Münster, where he habilitated in 1969 with his work "Die Aramäer Südbabyloniens in der Sargonzeit."

In 1968, together with Oswald Loretz and Kurt Bergerhof, Prof. Dietrich founded among others the publication series "Alter Orient und Altes Testament" (AOAT) and the annual journal "Ugarit-Forschungen (UF)." He also established the Ugarit-Verlag, which is playing a crucial role in disseminating scholarly knowledge in this field.

The academic community has lost a remarkable figure whose work and dedication have left a lasting impact. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and loved ones.
