Some Persian carpets carry the name of a city. Others carry the name of the master who gave them their character.
Ahmad Emad (1908–2001) was born in Tabriz and became one of the distinguished masters of the city’s carpet tradition. He learned the art of weaving at a young age and later developed his own approach to carpet design, becoming known for his distinctive sense of colour and refined compositions.
What makes an Emad Tabriz particularly fascinating is that the identity of the master can sometimes be recognised not only through a signature, but through his characteristic use of colour. Contemporary descriptions of his work specifically point to a distinctive palette that became something of a visual signature across his carpets.
His work also reflects what makes Tabriz itself so important in Persian carpet history. Situated in northwestern Persia, Tabriz developed into one of the country’s great centres of carpet production and international trade, combining the classical Persian design tradition with an openness to influences from the wider world.
A Tabriz Emad therefore represents more than the craftsmanship of a famous weaving city. It carries the artistic handwriting of an individual master, expressed through drawing, colour and an unmistakable sense of balance.
