Drawn from Andreas Koefoed and Jørgen Leth’s documentary Music For Black Pigeons, this soundtrack collects Jakob Bro compositions recorded during the film’s 14-year production. Bro is joined by an extraordinary group of improvisers including Bill Frisell, Lee Konitz, Craig Taborn, Paul Motian, Andrew Cyrille, Arve Henriksen and Midori Takada. Recorded across New York, Copenhagen and Lugano, the music captures spontaneous performances and close musical exchanges, including some of the final recordings by Konitz and Motian.

Fontaines D.C. vender i dag tilbage med annonceringen af deres femte studiealbum, Dopamine Chamber, der udkommer d. 16. oktober på XL Recordings / Playgorund Music. På albummet, der er produceret af James Ford og følger op på platin-albummet Romance fra 2024, bevæger bandet sig længere væk fra guitarlyden fra deres tidlige albums og rykker tættere på noget koldere, skævere og mere syntetisk.

Sammen med annonceringen udkommer førstesinglen ’Marianne’.

Som en overdådig og medrivende indledning til albummet, folder ’Marianne’ sig ud som et rødt fløjlsgardin på et smuldrende italiensk teater, med høje lofter og stort forfald. Til dels inspireret af thrillerserien Ripley fra 2024, handler sangen om eskapisme og hedonisme og fungerer som et sirenekald, der tilbyder lytteren en udvej fra – og mod – glemslen. “This year, you should come and stay here / You can follow my lead / I can help you disappear,” synger Grian Chatten mens arrangementerne glitrer rundt om ham. Men under forførelsen hviler et hårdere spørgsmål: hvor villig er en person mon til at opgive sin fantasi, når alternativet er at forblive fuldstændig bevidst om katastrofe?

Dopamine Chamber udkommer som et stjernebillede bag bølgende suk af smog: potente ballader og anthemiske melodier, der glimter igennem mulmens mørke. I en verden, der balancerer på randen af sammenbrud, undersøger det hvordan nydelse forandrer sig i en tid præget af fare – og hvad vores stræben efter den afslører om os.

Hen over albummet bevæger Fontaines D.C. – Grian Chatten, Carlos O’Connell, Conor Curley, Conor Deegan og Tom Coll – sig mellem tilfredsstillelse og frygt, indtil de to smelter sammen, og afspejler den overvældende oplevelse af kunstig intelligens, miljømæssigt kollaps og politisk vold, der alle rider på de samme algoritmer som memes, jokes og kendiskultur. “The album itself is a dopamine chamber,” fortæller Chatten. “You step inside and we test these different mind- or mood-altering pieces of music on you.”

Hvor Romance holdt spændingen i balance, tipper dette album balancen. “I think Romance was maybe 60 per cent human and 40 per cent corrupted by automation, and a loss of feeling,” fortæller Chatten, der har brugt tid blandt Venedigs, Wiens og Siciliens falmende storhed på jagt efter lyriks inspiration. “This one feels more like 60 per cent corrupted — the mask is wearing the face a little more.” Han modstår enhver tilbøjelighed til letkøbt optimisme: “I felt it would be more powerful to leave the hope out and reflect the ugliness honestly. This one needed to feel more like a catastrophic warning.”

“Our albums have always questioned a sense of place,” fortæller bassist Conor Deegan. “First Dublin, then being away from Dublin, and then trying to find the romance elsewhere. On this record, the question became: where do you escape to?” Ind i sig selv, måske – eller ind i hedonismen, fantasi, kosmetisk perfektion, evig ungdom eller det evige scroll på skærmen.

Fontaines D. C. har, med deres hidtidige fem albums, nægtet at gentage sig selv – fra Dogrel (2019) gennem A Hero’s Death (2020), til Skinty Fia (2022) og det kaleidoskopiske Romance (2024). Dopamine Chamber er deres mest radikale skift til dato: kolde synthesizer-toner, marcherende trommer, samples og triggers, flere sange uden guitar og strygere inspireret af italiensk pop fra 1960’erne, alt sammen forbundet i noget syntetisk. For guitarist Conor Curley har målet været at bryde med bandets egne referencepunkter: “I was trying to find stuff that pointed into the future.”

Albummet er indspillet og produceret med James Ford mellem London, på landet i England og Palermo, hvor Chatten har indspillet vokaler i en interimistisk sangboks lavet a madrasser og puder.

“There’s a poignant sense of us being on the brink of some other kind of form of humanity, or non-humanity,” fortæller Chatten. På deres femte album har Fontaines D.C. bygget et kammer. Hvad der sker for lytteren i det kammer, vil være selve eksperimentet.

Peter A.G. og Mads Michelsen har selv produceret albummet, mens nummeret ”Nu Rejser Ungdommen Hjemmefra” er skabt i samarbejde med producer og musiker Emil Falk. Mix og mastering er lagt i hænderne på Anders Schumann, som med sit moderne greb har været med til at fuldende et album, der lyder nutidigt, men samtidigt peger tilbage til GNAGS’ rødder.
