Rock painting with POSCA markers: a simple guide to painting stones.

Painting stones with POSCA markers is a simple and accessible creative activity for both children and adults. In Denmark, stone painting—often called stenmaling—is commonly used to create garden decorations, personalised gifts, welcome stones, and small painted rocks that can be left for others to discover.

For the best result, begin with a smooth, fairly flat stone. Light-coloured stones make the paint easier to see, while smoother surfaces are kinder to the marker nib and make detailed drawing more comfortable. Wash the stone with warm water and a little soap, then allow it to dry completely before painting.

A white base coat is optional, but it can be useful on dark or porous stones. It creates a more even painting surface, helps bright POSCA colours stand out, and can prevent the stone from absorbing too much paint.

Sketch the design lightly with a pencil before starting. Paint the larger shapes first, allow each colour to dry, and then add outlines, dots, lettering, or smaller details. POSCA paint markers provide opaque colour and can be layered once the previous layer has dried.

The marker size depends on the design. The extra-fine PC-1MR is useful for small details, the PC-3M is a versatile choice for most rock-painting projects, the PC-5M works well for larger shapes, and the broad 5 mm PC-7M is suitable for backgrounds and large stones.

When the design is completely dry, outdoor stones can be protected with two or three thin coats of clear acrylic varnish. This gives the finished surface additional protection from handling, moisture, and changing weather conditions.
