Join us at ark books for an engaging conversation to celebrate the launch of Amin Samman’s Currency of Nihilism (SUP 2026):

“What happens to economic life when meaning and value come apart? Drawing on Friedrich Nietzsche, E.M. Cioran, and Jean Baudrillard, Currency of Nihilism shows how trends in digital finance restage the dilemmas of nihilism in new ways. From cryptocurrencies and meme stocks to Silicon Valley venture capital and the global boom in artificial intelligence, economic life today thrives on the ambiguous allure of nothingness, annihilation, and disappearance. The result is a lucrative new culture of financial nihilism with no end in sight.”

Amin Samman will be in conversation with Elke Schwarz.

Amin Samman is Reader in International Political Economy at City St George’s, University of London. His research explores the temporal, historical, and existential dimensions of contemporary finance. He is founder and editor-in-chief of the journal Finance and Society, author of History in Financial Times (2019), and editor of Clickbait Capitalism: Economies of Desire in the Twenty-First Century (2023). Currency of Nihilism (2026) is his latest book.

Elke Schwarz is Professor of Political Theory at Queen Mary University London. Her work focuses on the intersection of technology, ethics and war. She has published extensively on military Artificial Intelligence (AI), autonomous weapon systems, drones and robots and is the author of Death Machines: The Ethics of Violent Technologies (2019). She is currently working on a project on the politics of apocalyptic AI. She is currently British Academy/DGAP Global Innovation Fellow 2026/27, based in Berlin.

The evening will consist of a conversation between Amin Samman and Elke Schwarz, followed by a Q+A.

After a successful (re-)launch on 25 April 2026 The Ark Review is officially resuscitated. We hope you enjoyed the party as much as we did! After a few glorious weeks of sunshine it is safe to say that summer has officially arrived ☀️Whether you are spending the summer abroad, in the city, or out in the countryside, we are sure that you are all doing lots of reading and writing and we’d love to share in part of that. The editorial team is looking for reviews, essays, short fiction, or poetry that meets the short to mid-length format. See the Review’s manifesto for inspiration.
