Choice and Provisional Life

Would you like fries with that? How shall I spend my free time after work tonight? Do I want the green shirt or the blue one? In our present day lives we are bombarded by an astonishing number of choices. While many of these choices are banal and meaningless, there are some that cut to the very core of ourselves: who or what do I want to be? How should I fashion this
self in this life? This sort of question is, in the liberal tradition, associated with freedom. The freedom to choose is paramount for a rational autonomous self. Yet in the face of an excess of choice we feel paralyzed and anxious. What if I choose wrong? What if I overlook the value of one of my choices? And what happens when this paralysis calcifies into a kind of presentism: provisional life? Join us for another episode of philosophy 4 plebs where we examine the role of
choice in our concepts of freedom and our pursuit of meaning.

BORN TO BE WILD/MILD
The Aesthetics and Ethics of Intense Living

We may not know what life to live, but we are quite sure of how we want to live it: intensely. To be truly ‘alive’, we keep telling ourselves, is to live life to the fullest—to love passionately, to lust unashamedly, to dance until your knees give out, and to feel the squeaky moistness of grass under your feet. But also, to feel every heartbreak, to suffer like a true romantic, to fail miserably, and to cry your eyes out. Mediocrity is the ultimate sin. Nobody wants to be lukewarm.

The world is in flux, and everything is becoming. Our identities are fluid, our values shifting, our ideals nonexistent. The content of life is beside the point. The form is what we crave. Intensity is the measure of that form. The form of contemporary life.

But do all the exotic flavours, the sexual kinks, the extreme sports, and the recreational drugs of our times manage to deliver and sustain that intensity? Does such intensity live up to its promise?

Join us in an intense session of Philosophy for Plebs to discuss the aesthetics and ethics of intensity.

Radical Justice – An Evening with Nani Jansen Reventlow

ark books is delighted to host an evening with Nani Jansen Reventlow to celebrate the release of the English-language version of her book “Radical Justice.” Drawing on her work in human rights and activism, Nani will create space for us as a community to think beyond symbolic change and towards a justice that points us to a new and fairer world.

This evening is an invitation to act collectively and remember that transformation is not only necessary, but possible.

How the evening will play out:

Doors open: 17:30 Music and Mingle
Talk: 18:00-19:00 Saranel Benjamin in conversation with Nani Jansen Reventlow. Reception and book signing: 19:00 onwards

We look forward to welcoming you in our space! Light refreshments and snacks will be provided. We are not an accessible venue unfortunately, but if there is any way we can assist in accommodating you, please let us know :)
About the book

If we were to take an exam on how we function as a society today, we would undoubtedly fail. Xenophobic populists are winning elections, economic inequality is reaching alarming levels, institutional racism remains unaddressed, and the climate crisis is nearing a tipping point. We need a new world.

In Radical Justice, Nani Jansen Reventlow outlines how we can start building a fundamentally different future today—one where everyone is genuinely free and equal, with equal opportunities to thrive. Drawing from her extensive experience as an international human rights lawyer and inspired by prominent thinkers in anti-racism and social justice, she presents a compelling collection of essays. These essays are incisive and powerful, guaranteed to leave a lasting impact on every reader, and offer suggestions on further learning, reflection and – yes – action.

A gift has many phases. The thought, the preparation, the anticipation (the best part for the giver), the reveal, the response, and, some might very well argue, a required reciprocation. Gifts, it seems, call out for two things: acceptance and more gifts. Can there be such a thing as an unreciprocated gift, ugly sweaters notwithstanding? Or a gift for which there is no possibility of reciprocation? Or rather is the nature of the gift purely economical, a peculiar holdover from a pre-capitalist mode of social organisation? Join us for the last episode of Philosophy for Pleb in 2025 where we discuss the nature of gifts and gift-giving.
