Choice and Provisional Life
Would you like fries with that? How shall I spend my free time after work tonight? Do I want the green shirt or the blue one? In our present day lives we are bombarded by an astonishing number of choices. While many of these choices are banal and meaningless, there are some that cut to the very core of ourselves: who or what do I want to be? How should I fashion this
self in this life? This sort of question is, in the liberal tradition, associated with freedom. The freedom to choose is paramount for a rational autonomous self. Yet in the face of an excess of choice we feel paralyzed and anxious. What if I choose wrong? What if I overlook the value of one of my choices? And what happens when this paralysis calcifies into a kind of presentism: provisional life? Join us for another episode of philosophy 4 plebs where we examine the role of
choice in our concepts of freedom and our pursuit of meaning.
