If you’ve ever questioned the importance of translated literature and it’s role not only in bringing a multitude of cultural perspectives and voices to the table, but also in sustaining memory and history, then this year’s winner of The International Booker Prize has all the answers you need.
‘Taiwan Travelogue’, a story of forbidden love and Taiwanese food, follows two women, a fictional Japanese writer and her Taiwanese translator, on a culinary tour across Taiwan in the 1930s, when Taiwan was under Japanese rule.
As always, the International Booker is an award shared in equal measure between the Taiwanese author Yang Shuang-zi, and the Taiwanese-American translator, Lin King. A well deserved tribute to translators everywhere!
