Summer, Sightfishing and a new Species!

During the summer heat, I have left the river and spent some time chasing carp and a species that has outsmarted me every time our paths crossed… the tench…
Just love the feeling and the thrill when it all comes together on a new species!

Lake Bled on Fly 🇸🇮

Few European lakes are more iconic in the world of carp fishing than the beautiful Lake Bled, with its cliffside castle, church island, and jumbo-sized carp roaming the crystal-clear, bluish waters.

So, while on a family vacation in Italy, I left my wife and kids by the pool for half a day of fishing in beautiful Slovenia in pursuit of a Lake Bled carp.
In the soft morning light the stars aligned!
A beautiful mirror carp sucked in my fly, muscled the 9wt like mad, and gave me a serious rush of adrenaline before Dare skillfully could secure it into the net!

As the crowd of tourists began to flood the banks of the lake, we spent the next couple of hours in the boat searching for catfish with big, heavy streamers. We managed one good take, which sadly didn’t stick to the hook, and had a couple of big zanders and pike following the fly in the crystal-clear water before we called it a day and I could make it back to Italy and the family before dinner. 😉

Thanks a lot, , for the invitation, for showing me this beautiful place, and for being a huge part of this epic experience! Sorry for making you get into the water😂

Super simple and easy baitfish pattern for seabass, and other salty critters!

Just tie in two colors of Ice flash on each side of the hook shank, finish of the thread, fold the flash back and shape the head with UV glue… Add the eyes, cover them up and add a final layer of UV glue as the last finish… Trim the flash into the right taper and done!

Super simple fly with a great movement! Its tied for our Danish seabass but works for a variety of diffrent species in both fresh- and saltwater!

F I N A L L Y • B A C K • O N • T H E • W A T E R !
After a long unwanted break due to shoulder surgery, I finally reached a stage where some fishing is once again possible!
During my recovery, I have had a lot of time to think! 😉 Thinking about new patterns and techniques to try out, so it has been amazing to be able to hit the river twice this week and put my thoughts into action! I couldn’t have asked for a much better start, despite not landing any fish but losing two in just a few hours of fishing!

Of course, I would have loved to squeeze the tail of just one of them, especially the one I lost yesterday! a really nice fish! BUT it was still very cool just to get the takes and the confirmation that the theories work! I’m really looking forward to diving a bit deeper into this!

The fly of the day(s) has been this “new” 10cm bullet flash ray tied with .dk streamer flash, using nothing else than a bead and a nano disc… so easy to tie that it almost feels like cheating! 😅

and btw. dont ask me what that sound at the hook set came from😂🤷‍♂️

🦀 S E A T R O U T 🦀

Really easy to “tie” but super effective when the salty trout are in for an easy snack!

Strip it and let it sit for a while or simply just drift it in tidal canals or along the reef when the tide is pushing!

- Ahrex SA280
- wapsi crab coin
- 1mm foam
- Rubber legs
- Futurefly shrimp eyes
- epoxy

Seatrout are well known shrimp lovers but what most dont realize is that seatrout love small crabs as well! A small crab is a solid and easy meal for trout and when they hit one, they hit it hard and the strikes are solid!

About two decades ago my dad and I had the first experience of crab feeding trout without paying too much attention to it…

over the last years my dad(as I rarely fish the “trout-coast” these days) has noticed a significant decline in the variety of prey in the shallows, with mainly crabs thriving and increasing in numbers. This, combined with the fact that crabs are often found in the stomachs of the trout he once in a while brings home for the table, led us into exploring diffrent approaches for targeting seatrout with crab flies.

Both stripping and dead drifting the flies in the current have proven extremely effective and have quickly become our favorite way to target coastal trout!

The fly is heavily inspired by crab patterns intended tropical waters but adapted to our northern coastal waters…
its light and drops slowly in the water and the legs adds a bit of movement maintaining the silhouette and shape of a crab.

“Ones you go crab you never go back!”😉🦀😂

THE PERFECT COMBO? 🟫 🟧 🟨 ✴️
In less than 5days the salmon season will once again be upon us! With the river currently running at the high end of a medium flow, water temp at 8celcius and a bit of rain in the forcast this double trouble flash tail could very well be the first fly for me to swing this season!

A hybrid of two of my most productive patterns… The marabou- and the flash flu, with a skinny flatbraid body to keep the translucent(ness) from the marabou flu and a tail flash to throw a bit of lightreflection in every direction!
A 5mm brassbead and a 6mm drainerdisc will get the fly down and give a bit of lift to the soft materials to make the move to their max…

tying videos of both the Marabou Flu and the Flash Flu can be found in my reels…
Do we need one of this pattern as well?
