Scandinavia is known around the world for architecture, interiors, and timeless design.

Yet fitness spaces have rarely been part of that conversation. That is a big reason why Richard started WaterRower Scandinavia.

Back in 2014, Richard visited his close friend Peter in Boston. He had helped build WaterRower internationally for years, and during that trip they spoke about how naturally the philosophy behind WATERROWER | NOHRD actually fits Scandinavian values.

Most treadmills keep moving, even when your running rhythm changes.

On the NOHRD Sprintbok V2, the speed follows your movement 👟

Without a motor controlling the belt, every step directly drives the curved running surface, whether you are walking, sprinting, or training intervals.

That creates a more natural running rhythm and a treadmill experience that feels closer to outdoor running.

The training also feels noticeably quieter. Since the Sprintbok is manually powered, energy consumption and long-term maintenance are significantly reduced compared to conventional treadmills.

This is Richard.

The face behind WATERROWER | NOHRD Scandinavia.

At 16, he moved alone from New Zealand to Australia, never imagining he would one day build WATERROWER | NOHRD across Scandinavia.

Originally trained as a mechanical engineer working in shipyards, Richard was later introduced to WaterRower through his close friend Peter, who helped grow the brand internationally in its early years.

In 2014, a visit to Boston sparked the idea of bringing the brand’s philosophy and design to Scandinavia and shortly after, WaterRower Scandinavia was born.

Today, Richard works with hotels, architects, businesses, and private homes across the Nordics to create spaces where fitness, aesthetics, and longevity come together.

He’ll be sharing more stories, projects, and thoughts behind the brand here going forward.

It started with one machine.

A rowing machine built to replicate movement, not simply create resistance 🚣

The limitation with many fitness setups is that they evolve in parts. One machine for cardio. Another for strength. Often without a clear connection between them 💪

WaterRower began with a single idea. Over time, it expanded into NOHRD covering cardio, strength, and mobility through the same approach to function, materiality, and design.

The range now works more as a system than a collection of products. Across training types and within the space it becomes part of.

In the Nordics, it is delivered through an authorized setup with direct access to products and experience.

Would you like the feeling of rowing on water at home? 🚣

Many machines aim for it, but the stroke often feels mechanical.

The limitation is the resistance system.

WaterRower A1 uses a sealed water tank, where a paddle moves through water and resistance follows your effort directly.

Many rowing machines simulate resistance 🚣

Very few replicate movement.

The limitation is not intensity. Most machines can create resistance well enough. The limitation is how the resistance behaves throughout the stroke.

Air and magnetic systems often feel detached from the movement itself. Mechanical rather than responsive.

WaterRower approached the problem differently in 1988. Using water resistance, the harder you pull, the more resistance the system returns. No manual adjustment. No interruption to the rhythm 🕰️

Just a direct relationship between effort and movement. The original patented design still defines every WaterRower built today.

Most home gyms run out of space long before they run out of ambition 💡

The wall is usually still unused.

The limitation is structural. Traditional training equipment competes for floor space, even when the exercises themselves require very little room.

WallBars approach the problem differently.

Mounted vertically in solid wood, they integrate strength, mobility, and stretching into a minimal footprint. The fold-out bar expands the functionality when needed, then disappears back into the structure when not.

Less equipment occupying the room.
