Electrical Horsepower
A simple and clear explanation of the concept of "electrical horsepower," how it is used, and how to understand it.
1. What is electrical horsepower?
Electrical horsepower is a unit of measurement used to express electrical power. It is commonly seen in specifications for electric motors, air conditioning equipment, and pumps to indicate the amount of power a device consumes or produces.
It is abbreviated as "HP" (from the English term "horsepower").
The term is historically derived from the capacity of a real horse to pull loads, but it has been precisely defined within the electrical system.
2. How many watts are in one electrical horsepower?
In the International System of Units (SI), power is measured in watts or kilowatts. The relationship between electrical horsepower and watts is fixed and defined as follows:
1 electrical horsepower (HP) = 746 watts (or 0.746 kilowatts)
In other words, if you have an electric motor with a rating of 1 HP, it means it consumes (or produces) power equivalent to 746 watts.
3. The difference between "electrical horsepower" and "mechanical horsepower"
You may occasionally encounter slight variations in how different sources define these types of horsepower:
Mechanical horsepower (Mechanical HP): Used for heat engines and automobiles; it is approximately equal to 745.7 watts.
Electrical horsepower (Electrical HP): Used for electrical equipment and motors; it is exactly equal to 746 watts. (In practical applications, the difference is negligible and does not affect routine, everyday calculations.)
4. Examples and Practical Applications
Air Conditioners and Pumps: When you hear of a 1-horsepower (hp) water pump, it means its motor is designed to handle approximately 746 watts of electrical power (taking the motor's efficiency into account).
Calculating Consumption: If a 1-horsepower (746-watt) device operates for one full hour, it consumes approximately 0.746 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity.
