This is possibly one of the most incredible lighthouses in the world!! Þrídrangaviti (Thridrangar) was built during the Second World War and is around 90m tall. Before the project could even start, the workes had an extremely difficult task. The helicopter was not yet in practical use, meaning the only way to get to the top was climbing. A rumour has it that they hired some local climbers from westmannaeyar to do the job. We even heard a story that at one point, the climbers had to climb on top of eachother because there where nowhere to get a grip!

Lion of Lucerne , Lucerne, Switzerland

This memorial commemorating fallen Swiss Guards of the French Revolution has been called the saddest stone in the world.

CREATED TO REMEMBER THE HUNDREDS of Swiss Guards who were massacred during the French Revolution, the Lion of Lucerne was emotionally evocative enough to garner the attention of none other than Mark Twain.

Carved directly into the wall of a former sandstone quarry in Lucerne, the titular lion statue sees the regal beast dying from a spear wound which is marked by a shield bearing the mark of the French monarchy.

The remarkably large monument was etched from the stone in 1820 and measures a remarkable ten meters in length and six meters in height.

Above the mournful lion is the inscription, “HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI,” which is Latin for “To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss,” and below the lion’s niche is a list of some of the deceased officers’ names.

In his 1880 travelogue, A Tramp Abroad, American author and noted satirist Mark Twain described the monument as “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world.” The lifeless eyes of the Lion of Lucerne may not be able to cry, but the endless tragedy in its gaze still inspires more than its share of tears.

Roman-era mosaic is uncovered during the excavation of an old building in Syria .

RASTAN, Syria —in 2022 Syria uncovered a large intact mosaic that dates back to the Roman era, describing it Wednesday as the most important archaeological discovery since the country’s conflict began 11 years ago.

Journalists were shown the mosaic in the central town of Rastan near Homs, Syria’s third largest city.

The mosaic, at 120 square meters (around 1,300 square feet), was found in an old building that Syria’s General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums had been excavating.

Lebanese and Syrian businessmen from the neighboring country’s Nabu Museum bought the property that dates back to the 4th century and donated it to the Syrian state.

Each panel was filled with square-shaped, small colorful stones measuring about half an inch on each side.

Dr. Humam Saad, the associate director of excavation and archaeological research at the directorate, said among the scenes the mosaic shows is a rare portrayal of Ancient Amazon warriors in Roman mythology.

“What is in front of us is a discovery that is rare on a global scale,” Saad told The Associated Press, adding that the images are “rich in details,” and includes scenes from the Trojan War between the Greeks and Trojans.

In Ancient Greek and Roman mythology, demigod hero Hercules slayed Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons, in one of his 12 labors.

Mount Taranaki, also called Mount Egmont, mountain, west-central North Island, New Zealand, on the Taranaki Peninsula.

The symmetrical volcanic cone rises from sea level to 8,260 ft (2,518 m) and has a subsidiary cone, 6,438-ft Fanthams Peak, 1 mi (1.5 km) south of the main crater. Both have been dormant since the early 17th century.

Streams issuing from the snowfields at the summit have carved deep gorges down the slopes. Dense forests clothe the mountain, giving way to the fertile plain at its base. Mt.

Taranaki is the youngest and most southerly of a group of volcanoes, including Pouakai and Kaitake, that are within Egmont National Park. The peak was sighted (1770) by the British navigator Capt. James Cook and was first climbed in 1839.
