Un día triste 😢
In the early hours of today (09:05 a.m. local time), Shigatse, Tibet’s second largest and one of its holiest cities, was hit by a devastating magnitude 7.1 earthquake.
The epicentre was located in Dingri County, which shares centuries-old history of Buddhism with the Indian scholar Padampa Sangye.
The impact of the quake was felt across Shigatse, a city home to 800,000 people. It was also reported that tremors were also felt in neighbouring India, Nepal, and Bhutan.
There are three townships and 27 villages within 12 miles of the epicentre, with a total population of around 6,900, and more than 1,000 houses have been damaged, Chinese state media have reported.
Free Tibet joins Tibetans and all those around the world in mourning the victims of this terrible tragedy.
We pray for the immediate mental, emotional, and physical recovery of all those who survived the widespread destruction, and we extend our deepest heartfelt condolences to those who have lost loved ones and been affected.
As the situation develops, we will be monitoring the situation closely with our research partners.
