Join us on Thursday July 16th at 6:00 pm for a conversation between the authors Rodrigo Fresán and Ethan Rutherford (Ethan Rutherford) as they discuss Fresán's english translation of his book Melville, winner of the Republic of Consciousness Prize!

Rodrigo Fresán is an Argentine fiction writer and journalist. Since 1999, Fresán has lived and worked in Barcelona, where he is a fixture on the city's literary scene. He is the author of twelve works of fiction, including The Invented Part, winner of the 2018 Best Translated Book Award. In 2017, he was awarded the Prix Roger Caillois.

Both of the author's books will be available for purchase or order at the shop :)

Join us on July 10th for our chat with malén denis to walkabout her recently translated debut novel "Lithium" with writer Rachel Ballenger 📚

Argentine writer and multidisciplinary artist Malén Denis will join Backstory Bookshop to discuss her recently translated debut novel, Lithium (New Directions Publishing). The book was first published in Spanish in 2020 by Caballo de Troya/Penguin Random House in Spain and translated to English by Laura Hatry and John Wronoski. Malén's work explores the political role of intimacy, the relationship between spirituality and late capitalism and the possibilities of first-person narratives. She studied Philosophy, Photography and Audiovisual Production, and holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the National University of Tres de Febrero.

Her novel Lithium is about what cannot be fully named or pinned down. “Language,” the author notes, acts “in this book as a pharmakon—both poison and remedy—inviting the reader to navigate its ambivalence. I wrote it by following the golden thread of poetry and the echoes of psychoanalysis, letting the images lead rather than the plot.” The novel conveys love found and love lost, blazing with the precarity of a life lived between jobs and between homes. It’s a feverish work swinging from hope to despair, of trying drugs both prescribed and not, of migration, of cat-sitting, of isolation, and of the search for meaning and for happiness when both prove elusive.
