Strangerland is the kind of novel that stays with you. A love story between two immigrants in 1990s London, tender and true, rooted in the question of what it means to belong somewhere.

We are so happy to be welcoming its author , one of the most exciting voices in contemporary British literature who spent years working in feminist politics before sitting down to write the books that had been living inside her.

She joins us for an author Q&A and will be leading a creative writing masterclass for all those who want to go deeper.

Current reads, current obsessions ✨

Here’s what’s been taking over the team’s bookshelves lately:

Mar is reading Set Point by Meg Jones — a sizzling sapphic enemies-to-lovers romance between two rival tennis superstars, taking place during the US Open.

Jess is reading Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman — a brutal, atmospheric mix of medieval horror and dark fantasy, taking the reader through plague-ravaged France as heaven and hell collide.

Vic is reading Strangerland by Monika Radojevic — a soaring, emotionally rich story about the power of love to transcend languages, borders and time. (A perfect pairing with our Migrant Tales pop-up book club, we think!)

Marta is reading The Ending Writes Itself by Evelyn Clarke — a locked-room literary thriller where six writers are stranded on a private island competing to finish a dead author’s final manuscript. Full of publishing drama, sharp satire, and classic mystery energy.

Abbie is reading Gratitude by Delphine de Vigan — quiet, moving, and beautifully written, centering on memory, ageing, language, and the small acts of kindness that stay with us long after they happen.

is coming to Backstory🖤

On May 15th, he’ll be in conversation with author to talk about his new novel Kill Dick — a satirical literary thriller set in LA that dissects wealth, addiction, and the strange numbness of living comfortably while everything burns two blocks away.

Luke is also a screenwriter (you might know Causeway or Eileen), and one of those writers who clearly can’t do anything the safe way. The book has been compared to Bret Easton Ellis and Joan Didion, and reviewed as “a Lynch- and Kubrick-inspired portrait of Los Angeles.” We’ll let you decide.
