From Hookuna, we close this chapter in Castilla y León with Kanu through his own words: a personal reflection on what this season has taught him as a guide and casting instructor.

“This season in Castilla y León has changed the way I guide.

A season is not only measured by the number of fish caught, but by what it teaches you as a guide and casting instructor.

This year reinforced a few lessons that will stay with me for a long time: respecting the rhythm of the river, adapting the day to each angler, slowing down to observe before acting, and understanding that every river has its own personality.

More than anything, this experience showed me that guiding is about far more than catching fish. Some of the most rewarding moments were not the biggest trout, but the moments when an angler understood a hatch for the first time, solved a presentation problem, or began to read the river differently.

Many visiting anglers arrive expecting great trout fishing. They leave talking about much more than that: the rivers, the landscapes, the food, the villages, the culture, and the people they shared the experience with.

This season reminded me that, as guides, we never stop learning. Castilla y León has challenged me, taught me, and ultimately made me a better guide.

These lessons will continue to shape the way I guide and teach in the future.

Same river. Same trip. Different needs.

Some anglers need to slow down and improve their drift. Others need to simplify their casting and focus more on presentation.

That’s probably one of the most interesting parts of guiding: understanding that every angler learns differently and connects with the river in their own way.

During these days in León, the goal wasn’t only to catch fish. It was, above all, to help each person better understand what was happening around them — to read the water, recognize different currents, understand where trout hold, and gradually build confidence in their own decisions.

Different rhythms. Different approaches. Different ways of reading the river.

And different ways of supporting each person throughout the experience.

What works for one angler may not work for another. The challenge — and the reward — is finding the right approach for each individual and helping them move forward at their own pace.

But in the end, we all shared the same river, the same days on the water, and the moments that make these trips memorable.

Tout commence bien avant la prise.

Cela ne vient pas d’un seul coup.
Ni d’un seul conseil.
Et presque jamais dès la première tentative.

Kanu accompagne, observe et corrige.
Parfois, un simple détail suffit :
un pas plus discret dans le courant,
un changement d’angle,
une dérive différente.

“Une année pour apprendre à lancer.
Toute une vie pour apprendre le reste. “

La rivière semble évidente.
Mais apprendre à lire l’eau demande du temps.

Où porter son regard.
Quand attendre.
Quand agir.

Car apprendre à pêcher commence par comprendre ce qui se passe devant soi.

Être présent.
Tenter le coup.
Se tromper.
Tenter encore.

Et petit à petit, tout prend son sens.

Et c’est là que tout change.

Le poisson est une conséquence.
Un aboutissement.
Un maillon dans la chaîne.

Le voyage, ce n´est pas la destination.
C’est ce que tu apprends en chemin.

And almost never on the first attempt.

Kanu guides, observes and corrects.

“Cada río tiene su propia estirpe de trucha — como una huella dactilar.”

Hay territorios que no se entregan fácilmente.
Castilla y León es uno de ellos.

Kanu lo conoce bien.
Llegó aquí para aprender a leer estos ríos de la mano de buenos maestros.
Hoy es él quien transmite ese conocimiento.

“Pescar en estas aguas no perdona — la precisión lo es todo.”

Una tabla en León. Aguas claras. Truchas extremadamente selectivas.
La vida está ahí — abundancia de insectos, cebas sutiles, corrientes — pero nada es evidente.
Bajos de línea largos — tippets finos — aproximación cuidadosa.
Reducir el ritmo y leer el agua con atención.

“Para engañar a estos peces, hay que pasar más tiempo observando que lanzando.”

Aquí nada está garantizado.
Cada captura hay que ganársela.

No es una pesca fácil, pero las que consigues se quedan contigo, mucho después del río.

There are places that don’t give themselves up easily.
Castilla y León is one of them.

Kanu knows it well.
He came here to learn how to read the rivers, guided by those who knew these rivers best.
Today, he’s the one passing that knowledge on.

“Fishing these waters is unforgiving — precision is everything.”

The long flats, known as ‘tables’ in León. Clear water. Highly selective trout.
Life is present everywhere — abundant insects, subtle hatches, complex currents — but nothing is obvious.
Long leaders — fine tippets — a careful approach.
Slow down, take your time and read the water.

“To fool these fish, you have to spend more time observing than casting.”

Nothing is guaranteed here.
Every fish has to be earned.

The ones you catch stay with you, long after the river.

Un insecte dans la paume de la main.
Presque rien.
Et pourtant, déjà une réponse.

La mouche que tu choisis n’est jamais un hasard.

Ensuite vient le geste, presque imperceptible — un angle, une dérive, un posé à la surface de l’eau.

Parfois, tout se joue là.

Mais les poissons, eux, s’accordent autrement — la lumière, la pression, le frémissement invisible du courant.

Ils sont là, mais pas toujours où on les attend.

La rivière, au premier regard, se donne facilement.
Des veines parfaites, des courants qui promettent.
Mais son langage reste infiniment complexe.

C'est là qu'il faut ralentir.
Douter de ses certitudes.

Une eau vivante ne se révèle qu’à ceux qui prennent le temps — une attention plus fine, le respect du silence, une forme d’humilité.

Avoir le sens de l’eau, ce n’est pas chercher les poissons.
C’est lire le milieu dans sa globalité : comprendre les liens invisibles, les interactions, les équilibres…
C’est voir comment les poissons habitent le courant, comment ils s’y déplacent, se protègent, et parfois disparaissent dans son mouvement.

La technique n’est qu’un outil, une porte entrouverte vers quelque chose de plus vaste.

Lorsqu'on prend le temps d'écouter la rivière dans toute sa profondeur,
c'est là que tout prend son sens.

Fly fishing is not only about catching fish.

It is about presence — truly being in the moment.

Walking slowly along a river, watching the light change on the water as the valley comes to life. Reading the water, feeling the rhythm of the seasons.

In Spain, every river has its own character — from the limestone streams of León to the vast valleys of the Pyrenees. Wild trout, technical water and landscapes shaped by time.

Guiding, for me, is first and foremost about sharing that experience.

Technique matters — but only as a way to connect more deeply with the river, the landscape and the people who share the water with us.

This season I’ll be guiding across León and the Pyrenees.

Hay viajes que se cuentan desde fuera.
Y otros que solo se pueden contar desde dentro.

Mahé llegó a la Patagonia chilena para vivirla por primera vez.
Para aprender. Para observar. Para sentir el río incluso antes de pescarlo.

“Eran las 18h.
Casi no me quedaba tiempo.
La luz era perfecta.
El viento se había detenido.
Los planetas estaban alineados.”

En un pequeño río que casi nadie pesca, se cruzó con una trucha que llevaba días soñando.

“Ya la conocía, como a una vieja amiga.
Cuando la vi desplazarse… clavé.
Y todo se detuvo.”

El combate fue breve.
La emoción, inmensa.

“Cuando la metí en la sacadera,
necesité un minuto antes de que el más mínimo sonido saliera de mi boca.
Estaba fascinado. Humilde frente a ese pez.”

No fue solo la trucha más grande de su vida.
Fue la experiencia más intensa que le ha ofrecido un río.

La Patagonia vivida desde dentro,
contada en primera persona.

Il y a des voyages qui se racontent de l’extérieur.
Et d’autres qui ne peuvent se raconter que de l’intérieur.

Mahé est arrivé en Patagonie chilienne pour la vivre pour la première fois.
Pour apprendre. Pour observer.
Pour ressentir la rivière avant même de la pêcher.

“Il était 18h. Je n’avais presque plus de temps.
La lumière était parfaite.
Le vent s’était arrêté.
Les planètes étaient alignées. “

Dans une petite rivière que presque personne ne pêche,
il a croisé une truite qu’il rêvait de prendre depuis plusieurs jours.

“Je la connaissais déjà, comme une vieille amie.
Quand je l’ai vue se décaler… j’ai ferré.
Et tout s’est arrêté. “

Le combat a été bref.
L’émotion, immense.

“Quand je l’ai mise à l’épuisette,
il m’a fallu une minute avant que le moindre son sorte de ma bouche.
J’étais fasciné. Humble face à ce poisson. “

Ce n’était pas seulement la plus grosse truite de sa vie.
C’était l’expérience la plus intense qu’une rivière lui ait offerte.

La Patagonie vécue de l’intérieur,
racontée à la première personne.
