Below is an update on Roman Burchell from his mum, Martina. …

I'm beginning to take deep breaths before posting the updates now. The side affects from the therapy are kicking in. We were expecting it but it's still hard for us both. Romi's throat is "on fire" and inflamed. He is scared to eat and drink and he is loosing his appetite and weight. He gets more tired and there are still 14 more sessions to take..!!!! We will not be using metro anymore but trying to find some other form of transport. The last option for us are taxis but they drive like crazy here in Madrid and it's very stressful and scary. We turned to some associations but they can't help us for many different reasons. One of them is that we are not residents in Madrid or that we raised enough money to cope.... 🥺😔

On the other side despite of everything we must stay positive and forget the tears... 💪 Romi is on Ibuprofen and Paracetamol at the moment to ease his situation. He still gets to do his homeworks and a call from his best friend Noah every day really cheers him up! 🥰❤️‍🩹 We also had a surprise visit from my brother last weekend who came for a little emotional support. 🥰

People often ask what we do with the money we raise and why we volunteer.

Here is just one very special example:

Some of you may have heard of Roman Burchell, a 12-year-old boy from Jávea on the Costa Blanca, who has been bravely battling a very rare form of cancer since last year.

Following a highly successful operation in which doctors were able to completely remove the tumour, Roman still needed a six-week course of daily proton therapy at a specialist hospital in Madrid.

Travelling back and forth each day simply wasn’t possible, so his family needed accommodation in the city.

This is where MABS Cancer Support Foundation stepped in.

As soon as we heard about Roman, we contacted his family and said: MABS will take care of it.

We arranged and funded a two-bedroom apartment in central Madrid, at a cost of €6,000, so that Roman and his mum, Martina, could focus entirely on what truly matters — his treatment and recovery.

We also made sure the apartment was large enough so that his dad, Philip, and sister, Timea, could visit whenever possible.

Their gratitude was overwhelming. But for us, what mattered most was knowing we had helped ease some of the stress during such a difficult time.

Roman is now on day four, with 29 more sessions to go, and he is coping incredibly well. We will keep you updated on his progress over the coming weeks.

In the meantime, we send all our best wishes to the Burchell family and want them to know they are very much in our thoughts.

And this is exactly why we do what we do.
