Lately we've been enthralled by The Old World and have enjoyed a cozy return to the game of Fantasy Battles! To accompany our newly-finished, oldschool armies we produced an entirely new wargaming theatre to deploy the regiments in. This would tie the campaign visuals together and partly inspire the armies' basing themes as well.

We had been waiting for an opportunity to reuse some old Citadel plastic terrain parts and to make a mundane and "naturalistic" terrain set fitting for several game systems. Loosely basing the idea on the Border Princes countryside and adding a spice of ruined Arnor vibes - we now had a subject to approach...

And we're live! War Head's next Horus Heresy event, The Grid, will be arranged on Saturday the 6th of June. This time we're introducing a completely new event format, weaving in-game objectives, hobby spark and soft score into a single mission chart. The event includes two thrilling games using 3000 point armies, a compact Horus Heresy quiz and an open army parade combined with photography, all concluding in a light-hearted awards ceremony. The idea is that everyone can choose their own event approach depending on their hobby motivations - paint & prepare before the event, or burn those brain calories trying to capture the right objectives on the battlefield! The second of two cinematic gallery videos from War Head Civil War 2025 is out now! This film showcases the other four of the eight armies that took part in our narrative Horus Heresy skirmish event - a 500-point format focused on camaraderie and the visual aspects of the hobby. These Emperor's Children, another memorable Civil War project, assemble with all the elegant flair, arrogance and depravity that is their Legion culture! The army was done according to the modern style for most of our projects - a combination of scratchbuilt Horus Heresy and Warhammer 40,000 kits with a few 3D-printed accessories and details. Some of the decorative armour trimming has also been sculpted out of green stuff. Everything is tied together by a cold-toned, limited palette with some contrasting rust hues in the basing.

The characters are always the best models to work on and Ollie made sure he had the opportunity to make plenty by creating some of the iconic Emperor's Children heroes as "counts as" leaders for his force. A regular Apothecary was portrayed by his interpretation of Fabius Bile, a Despoiler Sergeant was modelled as Lucius and the Legion Armistos was stylized to depict Marius Vairosean, the captain of the Third Company. The list was probably one of the favourite opponents in the Civil War 2023 as everyone was trying to take out the wicked villains - and proved to be a fun detachment to direct as well!

Our latest Traitor army project was the arcane Thousand Sons. I picked a Legion I was not very familiar with so the process of studying them was quite inspiring - it's always an interesting challenge trying to grasp a faction's "core essence" and then attempt to turn it into details in the miniatures.

The patrol is themed around a concept of a hostile city that has just been made compliant, and the sorcerer-scientists deploy to study the culture and secrets buried under the rubble. As the army's theme is the moment after the fighting has ceased, I've modelled most of the troops in non-combat posing - at ease, in overwatch or on patrol. There's a lot of personal headcanon and specific design thoughts that went into these models - the Instagram posts for each unit include some musings about their conversion details.

The conversion essentials here were Tortuga Bay bodies, Eldar Shadow Spectres clothing strips and various GW/FW resin bits in arms, hands and weaponry. The army was painted with products from Citadel, AK-Interactive and Scale75. Basing accessories were by MicroArt Studios, Kromlech and Green Stuff World.

It's interesting how much room there is for artistic, personal interpretations and strong, themed army composition choices even in small, 500 point patrol rosters. We often talk about how neat it is to see personal takes on different Legions - especially now as we have pretty much every faction represented in our joint collection we start to see new, reimagined versions of the same subjects. It's all down to the vision and understanding of the culture behind each faction, as each Legion can be interpreted in miniature art in so many ways. The combination of Salamanders and Solar Auxilia elements in Ollie's Civil War list was particularly fitting for the 18th Legiones Astartes.

When it comes to modelling, Ollie chose to mix armour marks within the squads for an olschool Tactical Squad vibe and also to have different kind of details to paint. These might also be the first Heresy force Ollie has done with a warm colour palette - a proper collector's item! The basing scenery has been created with the help of GamersGrass tuft kits.

Here's some newly-finished troops of the Iron Sultanate - a complete Trench Crusade warband ready for violent adventures! Our customer had seen the miniatures we produced for Factory Fortress and really liked the colour palette, which we were happy to imitate on these models. The paints used are from the John Blanche signature set by Army Painter, providing a striking yet down-to-earth scheme for the models. These acrylics were complemented by AK Interactive Liquid Enamel Pigments for the dusty weathering effects.

We handled the entire production from setting up the 3D files, printing the models and finally painting and basing the miniatures to form a uniform warband. Hopefully these warriors serve their new master well in conflicts to come!
