1. Helsinki Cathedral (Helsingin tuomiokirkko) 🏛️
The iconic “face” of Helsinki. Designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, who drew inspiration from the grand architecture of St. Petersburg, its white walls and green domes dominate the skyline. Pro tip: Look up! The roof features 12 zinc statues of the Apostles—one of the largest collections of its kind in the world.

2. Uspenski Cathedral ⛪
The largest Orthodox church in Western and Northern Europe. It’s built from red bricks salvaged from the destroyed Bomarsund Fortress in the Åland Islands. Its 13 golden cupolas represent Jesus and the twelve Apostles.

3. The Rock Church (Temppeliaukio kirkko) 🪨
An architectural marvel carved directly into solid granite. From the outside, it looks a bit like a buried UFO! It’s famous for its incredible acoustics, so try to catch a concert here. Fun fact: the “bells” are actually a digital recording composed by Taneli Kuusisto.

4. The Parliament House (Eduskunta) 🇫🇮
A powerhouse made of Finnish pink granite. It’s a symbol of Finland’s independence and democracy. It’s famous for its “Paternoster” elevator—a doorless lift that never stops moving! While the lift is reserved for MPs and staff, the building’s majesty is open for all to admire.

Today, February 6 is Sámi National Day.

The Sámi are the Indigenous people of the North, living in lands where the sun disappears for weeks in winter and never sets in summer. They live under skies alive with the colors of the Northern Lights. 

About 9,000 Sámi live in Finland.

Finnish Sámi speak three Sámi languages: Northern Sámi, Inari Sámi, and Skolt Sámi however all of which are sadly endangered.

Their way of life has always been closely connected to nature, and even in today’s high-tech world, reindeer herding, fishing, hunting, berry picking, and traditional crafts (duodji) remain central to their identity.

Sámi culture lives on through joik, their unique traditional form of singing, and through gákti, the traditional clothing worn on holidays and special occasions. The colors and details of each outfit can reveal a person’s home region, and even their family.

In Helsinki, the Sámi community is small, but they come together for cultural events and celebrations. So you, probably have a chance to see them today around the city.
