Subhas Parshotam officially opened the Marist Old Boys Association's 2023 Annual Bazaar at the Marcellin Grounds earlier today (Saturday 11 Nov 2023).

A large number of Marist Old Boys were present together with Br Fergus and Br Kees Van der Weert. Tents were set up in the names of the 4 Houses of Marist.

Subhas shared his education at Marist and how he had learnt a lot from this school, not only academically, but also morally, socially, and spiritually.

He also spoke about how the school had instilled in him the values of excellence, integrity, service, and leadership, which have guided him throughout his personal and professional journey.

There have been some milestones achieved in Fiji which have truly changed lives in Fiji.

The first, I believe, was Courts which brought white goods and electrical appliances into people's homes (under the concept of hire purchase).

Then we had the introduction of The Hot Bread Kitchen which made easy access to bread and bread products over retail outlets. People who never used to consume bread started to eat bread. You could see people with bags of loaves catching the bus home after work. The first outlet at Harbour Centre had queues each late afternoon as long as that as at a Fiji NZ rugby 7s final.

Then there was supermarket competition. We only had MH before - but then RB Patel came along and set up its first store at Centre Point. And then came a raft of other supermarkets ... and now we have Extra Supermarket which is a game changer.

Then we had shopping complexes. FNPF started off in the 1980's but nothing major happened till 2006 when Mid City was built. And then there was Tappoo City, MHCC and then Damodar City. Damodar City was iconic. It gave variety of shopping, variety of dining, variety of entertainment and a variety of activities in one location (with lots of parking). A first for Fiji (the fact that the stupendous success of the complex resulted in car parking issues is another problem).

And then came Flagstaff Plaza - which turned shopping experience on its head and has become a great hang out place in Suva for shopping, dining, coffee or simply a place to do business.

And then, of course, we had the Prius. This brought cars (or second cars) into people's homes and changed the lives of Fijians.

All monumental events in the uplifting of lifestyle of Fijians.
