The making and repairing of your instrument bows

This week, I am sorting out all the sticks I took the density from last week.
It will help a lot when choosing the next violin, viola or cello bow if they are already in order on the shelf.
And sometimes you get funny moments finding how a worm decided to go right through a tree and ended up making me wonder if and how I will be able to use an otherwise nice piece of pernambuco 😉.

Today I am measuring the density of some pernambuco sticks. It is very important to have that measurement to choose which instrument each stick will become. Usual density for pernambuco is between 0.9 and 1.2 kg/m3 (masse volumique in French)
The process is to weigh the stick dry and then in the water. Doing a simple calculation, we get the density.
Pernambuco sticks being very long, I bought a pvc tube to sink the sticks in, underneath a very rudimentary scale system.
On the last picture, you can see one of the floatiest sticks I have ever seen 🤣 (so its density is very low, possibly under 0.8)

Here is the usual pack to go on exhibitions. You mainly need the bows and.... business cards !! (I almost forgot them when going to Toulouse in April 😅). Then I usually take a 'survival kit' including polishing material, rosin, my eyelet plyers and superglue (bowmakers' best friend but they won't admit it ^^). For the Salon in Cologne, I also took my mark but that was exceptional.

If you wonder what this is... it's my new laser engraving machine ! On top of my viola bow 🤯😅
And it went juuuuuust fine!
I put the machine on a lined piece if paper. The lines helped me keep my small vice parallel.
Then I stuck the viola bow stick inside the vice, rechecked all parameters 7 times (more reliable than 5 times) and pushed the start button! 🥵😁

Today, the temperatures have gone down so I could plane some pernambuco... but I don't believe it will last... how do you deal with your work when it's so hot ?🔥🌡🔥

Those are the last 3 bows I made for this year's exhibitions. Violin, viola, cello. 3 different instrument bows, 3 different pearls, 3 different styles, 1 French maker : me 😉.

Choosing the leather and the silk to match the pearl is a moment that I quite enjoy. I found those colors really fun.

So now... that's what we have : a carved frog ready for receiving a pearl eye, next to an almost blank frog.
But it's not yet finished! (Although I think it's the last picture I can show of that frog for the moment 😇)
