Official and warm thanks to

Frankly about a year ago I was barely aware of her existence despite 25 years in the kora realm and anthropological research on the subject (!!!)

I quickly came to know what an incredible influence she has been on the life of many kora players. I can understand the role it played on my journey.

And it is ongoing now! Being invited at the 50 year anniversary of mande studies at SOAS, along with awesome musicians .sissoko was on the one hand a rich experience,
and on the other hand an opportunity to bring my work to the light.

My work being the creation of specific tools to support and give strength to the voice and sound of the kora in our modern world:

✅specific high performance pickup systems, that first help to bypass the difficulty for kora players and sound engineers to amplify the kora with clarity and power in any situation, free of feedback and noise problems - and second bring new options to the desire of the kora player, like midi or stereo capability.

✅I also pioneered in very lightweight koras, keeping the best sound quality and playability (despite the absence of calabash), with the main intention to allow the korafola to travel easier when on tour - my Travel Koras can be accepted on board airplanes, hard case or soft case can be much more compact, breakability is drastically reduced. Also my neck designs since 2006 are always thought of keepind ergonomics in mind, and have inspired a huge number of builds, including clever variations.

All that being said, this situation is like a surprise to me. I was a beginner at kora, I just wanted to know the traditional songs, and be a fairly good enough kora player. I didn’t know I could and would build anything, and never learned how to build a kora - I come from master’s degree university studies in physics and acoustics so I did have theory to rely on. Only no hand/tool/wood/lutherie knowledge…

In my view the traditional kora with calabash, skin and konson is already high-tech. The spirit of the kora, the ones who carry it, is where it’s magic exists. I just add tools to the griot box

Okay so the big news is much around the

This exact model is the most complete as of today. It was actually just finished the day before I took off to London for the 50 year anniversary event at SOAS.

It was almost in tune, then I tuned it upon arrival, and the very first man to play this kora is Jali Bakary Konteh, son of Dembo — from the famous and powerful Dembo and Kausu kora duet🙏

Such a great pleasure to meet Bakary!

2022 was intense and ongoing, many things to post.

Hi all!
After a period of silence, but also restore, refresh, replenish, deep reboot, / will be back to serve you better, and from a stronger base.

There have been good times and harder times - that’s part of the job - though one has to measure some limits. I have had to take a special break and strong disconnection. Let’s leave this behind.

Now also the workshop has been thouroughly, deeply, intensively reorganised & re-optimised!

After +14 years of creating custom koras, kora pickups and amplifiers, moving through 8 different workshops, both experience, and lots of parts, tools, stuff have been accumulated!! This is the biggest episode ever in sorting through every bit, screw, part, component, you name it - I don’t even know how many thousands of objects are around me in total. It was almost a nightmare going through this, as much as it is a dream now reaching the end!

Un petit point d’actualité.
J’ai un en basse fréquence dans l’oreille gauche depuis 4 mois au moins.
Bourdonnements, influence sur le repos et la concentration.
La cause n’est pas d’origine sonore, la solution sera le : ma seule “pause” depuis un an fût un covid en janvier.
L’acouphène est chronique mais pas strictement permanent: il y a eu quelques interruptions, de quelques minutes, quelques heures, voire quelques jours! Notamment - chance! - avant et pendant le festival Le Son Continu, ça n’a pas du tout été un calvaire!!😅 ouf!!!

Le remède principal pour moi a été le Magnesium✅
Il y a eu un peu d’effet aussi avec une combinaison d’huiles essentielles (hélychrise Italienne, petit grain bigarrade, basilic oriental et patchouli)
On m’a informé d’une méthode en passant des sons/musiques différentes dans chaque oreille en simultané - je n’ai pas essayé et cela concernerait des acouphènes aigüs, plutôt une approche neurologique alors que le mien est physiologique.

Voilà pour ça, je ne dramatise pas, je tiens jusqu’à vendredi prochain et je ferme l’atelier pour la pause estivale.

Il y a aussi la question de ma machine laser. Avec tous les réglages et entretiens de maintenance à ma portée, elle est tout au plus à 50% de ses capacités. Tout est ralenti et à chaque opération il y a des risques de perte de matière.
L’intervention tant attendue du service technique est pour vendredi prochain. Je ne serai fixé qu’à ce moment là pour savoir si elle est à nouveau pleinement opérationnelle et si et combien de frais cela entraine dans le cas contraire.

En somme, je suis très content de tout ce qui a été réalisé depuis septembre dernier, notament les dernières , avec aussi de belles commandes pour les classiques, toutes les évolutions sur les micros … je ne suis pas en reste, il reste des idées à développer et à mettre au point, aussi un nouvel dans les tiroirs✨

Donc d’ici là, je finis toutes les commandes que je peux, avec l’énergie qui reste disponible, le thÉ (voir post précédent), le , et toute l’envie indélébile depuis le premier jour de il y a plus de 15 ans!
