Nostalgia (2022)

Artists Book
Paperback, black cardboard cover
300 pages
17 x 23 cm
Edition of 1000, 6 different covers (random choice)

“This project is about erasure. Memory. Forgetting. Data. Archives. Etcetera.” (David Horvitz)

The passages in this book are descriptions of digital photographs that have been deleted. In a culture over-inundated and amassed with digital images and eroded attention spans, David Horvitz decided to start erasing his photo archive. This erasure became an artwork.

Nostalgia is the third edition of the Nostalgia Series. It presents 300 recently deleted private digital photographs of the artist, in the form of an image description, the original time of creation and its filename.

Mishka Henner
Rearranging Baldessari’s Balls In a Straight Line (First Attempt) (2021)

Portfolio of 12 offset prints with title page and colophon, each 24.1 x 32.1 cm, housed in protective folder
Edition of 100, numbered and signed

In 2014, Mishka Henner (b. 1976, lives in Manchester) took a few minutes to rearrange in a straight line all the balls on John Baldessari's (1931-2020) twelve photographs from Throwing Three Balls in the Air to Get a Straight Line (Best of Thirty-Six Attempts) portfolio, published in 1973. Using high resolution scans and a digital retouching software, he granted Baldessari's wish - at first attempt. By providing this service, he simultaneously destroyed the fundamental idea contained in Baldessari's work which was already referencing Marcel Duchamp’s 3 Standard Stoppages (1913-14), often referred to as Duchamp’s “standards of chance”.

Digital retouching softwares offer the illusion of a perfect world, where Baldessari's balls are all perfectly aligned and no mistake can happen, hence annihilating any idea of chance.

In 2021, one year after John Baldessari's death, Mishka Henner produced with the gallery the portfolio Rearranging Baldessari’s Balls In a Straight Line (First Attempt) containing the twelve retouched photographs. With his exact facsimile of the original edition, Henner paid tribute with a meaningful joke to a giant and his balls.

Kikuji Kawada
The Map / Chizu / 地図
[Facsmile reprint]

The original version of The Map was published on August 6, 1965, for the 20th anniversary of Hiroshima bombing. This object, conceived by legendary graphic designer Kohei Sugiura, composed of different strata (case, envelope, map, text and images), is a complex reflection about the signs left by the explosion on the lands of Hiroshima. Kawada employs a very metaphoric approach which expresses between reality and abstraction, echoing in a way the words of the writer Kenzaburo Oe : "a world of violence where I had to live".

160x243x30 mm, 190 pages, 95 illustrations.
Facsimile of the 1965 original edition, hardcover, housed in a specially-made box

Raphaël Dallaporta
Ruins

Presented as a box containing unbound papers, this book is more of an object which has to be discovered step by step. In 2010, Raphaël Dallaporta, with a French-Afghan team of archaeologists, made photographs from a drone of archaeological sites (500 BC) on the Afghan mountains. Through his practice, Dallaporta allows scientists to access data which can not be detected from the ground. After automatic shots, the photographs are software-generated and reassembled as geometrical maps. The book Ruins offers a discovery of this rigorous almost scientific body of work, which drives the reader to unfold himself the maps and patiently appropriate these images of an encounter between ancient and contemporary histories.

Childhood Days (A & B covers)

Themed around "childhood days that every grown-up has once gone through", this collection of photographs ranging from early efforts to recent works includes numerous pictures that were never before published in a photo book.

I don't believe that every person in the world yearns after his or her childhood. Every childhood has its times of grief and suffering. However, once our childhood days lie far behind us, and we find ourselves approaching the end of our life, I suppose we all remember our time as little kids with the same fondness that we're now looking at our own children with.

Daido Moriyama
Paris 88/89

In 1988 and 1989, Daido Moriyama rented a small bedroom in Paris with the idea of using it as a small private gallery space, following his Room 801 space located in Shibuya, Tokyo. Progressively giving up on that idea, he described his Parisian experience as 'ambiguous and floating', the opposite of the ideal vision he had in his teenage years. Fascinated by Eugène Atget, Moriyama delivers with this body of work the melancholy that he experienced while wandering in the streets of Paris like a stray dog. The book includes a text written by the artist, extract of the final tome of Memories of a Dog, as well as an interview with Jean-Kenta Gauthier.
