Le statut de l'artiste dans la société
The status of the artist in society is often marred by prejudices, particularly when their image is associated with that of pseudo-drug addicts. This label, sometimes unjustly assigned, can create a form of subordination, where the artist is perceived more as a failing individual than as a talented creator. Society tends to reduce their artistic value to their life choices, thereby overlooking the richness of their work and the messages they convey. This phenomenon underscores a stigmatization that can hinder professional and social opportunities, placing the artist in a vulnerable position. Consequently, the way they are viewed becomes an obstacle, limiting their ability to assert themselves and express themselves fully.
It is essential to recognize that the artist, beyond their personal struggles, is primarily a cultural contributor whose vision deserves to be appreciated independently of the caricatures that may surround them. In many cases, the artist's journey begins at a young age, often as if it were a destiny or providence. At 12 years old, during their education in school, they begin to explore and nurture their creativity, thus discovering their passion for art. However, this distorted perception shaped by stereotypes leads to a situation where the artist becomes, in a way, the primary scapegoat for bearing the burdens of the psychotic individuals populating their environment. Indeed, society often projects its own fears and judgments onto the artist, holding them responsible for the glorification of self-destructive behaviors. This can create a vicious cycle where the artist, while seeking to express their truth and challenge established norms, finds themselves trapped in an image they did not choose.
In this context, European laws protect artists. For example, Directive 2001/84/EC of the European Parliament on the resale right guarantees artists the right to remuneration for the resale of original works, thereby reinforcing their economic and cultural status. Furthermore, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union states in Article 27 that "everyone has the right to benefit from the protection of their moral and material interests resulting from any scientific, literary, or artistic production." These legislative provisions highlight the importance of protecting and valuing the artist in society, contributing to the recognition of their role and the fight against the stigmatization they may face. By redefining their status, it is possible to mitigate prejudices and encourage a more balanced and respectful view of the artist and their journey.
