After being diagnosed with breast cancer, everything changed — not just emotionally, but practically. What I eat, what I wear, how I clean, even the air I breathe — all of it. And one everyday item most women use without much thought is deodorant. Today, I want to talk about that. Why I Now Look Twice at My Deodorant Label

🧼 After my diagnosis with breast cancer, my entire perspective shifted. I no longer look at products the same way. I don't just check expiry dates anymore — I study ingredients. I ask, “What’s in this?” and “What does it do to my body?” One thing that stood out? Deodorants. Something I used every single day under my arms — right next to sensitive lymph nodes and breast tissue.

So I started to ask:
● What’s in traditional antiperspirants?
● Could there be a link between certain ingredients and increased health risks?
● Are there safer alternatives — especially for women like me? Ingredients I Avoid Now: If you’re using traditional deodorants or antiperspirants, here are some ingredients to watch out for: Aluminum compounds: Common in antiperspirants to block sweat glands. Some studies have raised concerns about its possible link to hormone disruption and breast tissue changes. Parabens: These are preservatives that can mimic estrogen. Estrogen plays a role in breast cancer development. Phthalates: Found in synthetic fragrances — can interfere with hormone function. Triclosan: An antibacterial ingredient with potential endocrine-disrupting effects.

My Safer Swaps I now opt for plant-based, aluminum-free, and fragrance-free or naturally-scented deodorants.
My goal is to choose clean, effective, and gentle products that won’t add to my body’s toxic load.
Here are a few Canadian and trusted clean deodorant options: Available in Canada (and often at Shoppers, Well.ca, or online): Routine Deodorant (Made in Canada, clean ingredients, various strengths and scents) Native (Widely available, aluminum & paraben-free) Schmidt’s Natural Deodorant (Plant-based, good for sensitive skin) Green Beaver (Canadian brand, organic, aluminum-free) Attitude Living (Made in Quebec, EWG-verified, very safe) Tips When Switching to Natural Deodorant: Your body might need a few days to adjust — this is normal. Detoxing your underarms with bentonite clay masks can help during the transition. Look for options with magnesium, baking soda (if tolerated), or activated charcoal. Reapply as needed — natural options might require 2 applications/day at first. Final Thoughts: This isn’t just about sweat.

It’s about our health as women. It’s about taking small but meaningful steps to protect ourselves. I know it’s overwhelming to change everything overnight, but start with what you use daily — like deodorant. If you’ve been thinking about making the switch, let this be your sign.
With love,
Amina

Personal Review: Rhode Peptide Glazing Fluid

I didn’t think I needed another serum — until this one.

For months, I watched people rave about the Rhode Peptide Glazing Fluid — the whole “glazed donut skin” trend had me side-eyeing because I have melanin-rich, combo skin, and not every glow product actually works for us.

But listen... I gave in. I tried it. And here’s my honest take, sis:

▪️ Texture: It’s like a silky water jelly. Spreads easy, sinks in fast.
▪️ Smell: Barely any — clean, no fake sweetness (thank God).
▪️ Feel: My skin drinks it up without getting oily.

After 10 days of using it in my night routine, here’s what I noticed:
✅ Skin feels plumper in the morning
✅ My dark areas look more even-toned, not lighter — just smoother
✅ My face stays soft all day, even under makeup
✅ No breakouts. No irritation. Just… luxury moisture

Glow Level: 5/5
If “soft life in a bottle” was a thing, this would be it.

It won’t solve all your skin issues, but if you want to feel expensive and dewy, it’s a win.

Would you splurge $38 CAD for that celebrity glow? Or is it too much hype? Let me know👇🏾

💌 Save this if you’re building a melanin-friendly skincare stash.

Toner that went viral — but is it really for us?

I finally tried the COSRX Niacinamide 2% + BHA Toner after seeing it everywhere on TikTok and YouTube.

▪️ Skin Type: Combination + Melanin-rich
▪️ Texture: Super watery, no sting, absorbs fast
▪️ Smell: Barely there (which I love)
▪️ First 7 days: My pores looked calmer, dark spots a bit smoother
▪️ Downside: You need to pair it with hydration — it’s not enough alone

Glow Level: 4/5
It’s gentle, non-irritating, and I see why it’s trending… but don’t expect overnight miracles!

Would I repurchase? Maybe. I like it, but I’ll test longer before calling it my holy grail.

Save this if you're considering it.

Honest Review: Good Molecules Niacinamide Brightening Toner
As someone with deep brown skin, finding a toner that doesn’t sting, dry me out, or mess with my melanin is hard. But this one? It quietly worked its magic.
I’ve been using the Good Molecules Niacinamide Brightening Toner for a few weeks — just morning and night on a cotton pad. What I noticed:

• My dark spots (from past breakouts) are slowly fading
• My skin feels smoother and looks more even-toned
• No burning, no weird residue, and it layers well under other products

It's gentle, affordable, and gives my skin a calm, hydrated finish. Not an overnight miracle, but definitely a real one over time.

If you’ve got melanin-rich skin and want to even your tone without harshness — I’d honestly recommend this.

Honest Review: e.l.f. Halo Glow Pressed Powder – Tan Neutral (Gifted by Topbox Canada)

Some days, doing my makeup is more than just a beauty routine — it’s how I hold myself together.

As a Black woman living with depression and anxiety, there are mornings when it’s hard to even get out of bed. But I’ve found that even the smallest rituals — like pressing powder onto my skin, blending in warmth, or simply seeing my face glow again — can help me feel a little more present… a little more me.

That’s why I was honestly grateful to receive the e.l.f. Halo Glow Pressed Powder in Tan Neutral, gifted by . I didn’t expect much — because let’s be real, powders can be hit or miss when it comes to melanin-rich skin, especially with my warm undertones and oily T-zone.

But this one surprised me. The soft-blur finish felt like a gentle filter over my tired skin.
The shade Tan Neutral blended into my complexion — no ash, no flashback.
The mirror and puff made it easy to do touch-ups when my energy was low.

It didn’t just mattify — it let my natural glow show through, and somehow, that made me feel seen too. It’s affordable. It works. And on days when I need a little help to face the world, it shows up for me.

Thank you e.l.f. Cosmetics , Elf and Topbox for this beautiful little reminder that glow comes from within — and sometimes, from a compact too.

Personal Review: e.l.f. Bronzing Drops (Dark Skin Edition)
As a girl with a deep skin tone, I’m always cautious with applying bronzing products— a lot of them don't show up at all or leave a weird undertone. But the e.l.f. Bronzing drops is truly a win for me.
The color is rich and warm, and it blends beautifully into my dark skin without looking muddy, reddish, or orange-ish. It enhances my natural glow rather than look all caked , which is a huge win for me.
When using it with makeup, I like to mix 2-3 drops with my foundation/concealer or apply it directly on my cheekbones and nose before blending out with a damp beauty sponge rather than a brush. It acts almost like a liquid bronzer and gives my makeup a radiant, glow, and sun-kissed finish.
When wearing it alone, I mix it with my moisturizer or sunscreen. On bare skin days, this combo gives me that healthy, fresh, lit-from-within glow that makes my skin look alive.
It dries down nicely without it being sticky and doesn’t disturb the makeup layered on top. I also appreciate that it just gives a smooth and dewy finish.
The only thing I’d like to change is the packaging—it can be a bit messy if you're not careful with the dropper. But performance-wise, it’s easily one of my new favorite multitaskers for both natural and glam sun-kissed looks.
Rating: 4.8/5 – Highly recommended for deeper complexions looking for that effortless glow!

Product Review: Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum

I’ve been using the Good Molecules Discoloration Correcting Serum consistently for a few weeks, and I’m impressed by how gentle yet effective it is. The serum is lightweight, absorbs quickly, and layers beautifully under other skincare and makeup without pilling.

Key Ingredients:
It features niacinamide and tranexamic acid, both known for targeting dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and uneven skin tone. I noticed the formula is fragrance-free, which is perfect for my sensitive and oily dkin.

My Experience:
Within the first two weeks, I saw subtle improvements in the overall brightness of my skin. After a month, some stubborn acne scars and dark spots began to fade. It didn’t irritate my skin or cause any breakouts—something that’s happened to me with other brightening serums in the past.

Texture & Feel:
It has a slightly viscous texture—not too watery, not too thick—and glides smoothly. A little goes a long way.

Final Verdict:
If you're looking for an affordable, effective option to reduce discoloration without harsh actives, this serum is a winner. *It's not an overnight miracle, but with consistent use, it delivers visible results.* Plus, the price point makes it accessible.
