Dollar Brand, Don Cherry, Carlos Ward - The Third World-Underground

Wewantsounds is honoured to announce the first-ever international release of the legendary collaboration between Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand) and Don Cherry, featuring Carlos Ward. Following Ibrahim’s recent passing, this long-awaited edition is all the more relevant. Recorded live in 1972 at Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen, this highly sought-after album was originally released exclusively in Japan in 1974 on the cult jazz label Trio Records via its revered Nadja imprint. An essential chapter in the musicians’ discographies, the performance skilfully blends jazz with rich South African rhythms and global influences. This definitive reissue features fully remastered audio, the original artwork, and a booklet with new bilingual liner notes (Eng/Fr) by Jacques Denis.

Available as LP or CD.

Christer Bothén / Oren Ambarchi / Johan Berthling / Andreas Werliin - Serpentine LP

After the wild Afro-jazz fusion of Trancedance (reissued as BT118) and the meditative solo Christer Bothén Donso n’goni (BT133), legendary Swedish multi-instrumentalist Christer Bothén returns to Black Truffle as part of a dream quartet completed by the three members of Ghosted: Oren Ambarchi (guitar), Johan Berthling (bass) and Andreas Werliin (drums). Recorded at a rustic studio built by Werliin and Hans Fredriksson in the sylvan surrounds of Hamburgsund, Sweden across a few days in September 2023, Serpentine offers up four generous slices of hypnotic repetition and shimmering resonance, cut through with wild bursts of Bothén’s bass clarinet.

Highly recommended.

The Shadow Ring - Lighthouse 2LP

Recorded in 1997, on The Shadow Ring’s return from their final American tour, Lighthouse captures the group at their most stripped-down and visionary. Graham Lambkin’s fractured texts conjure Folkestone’s haunted coastline—Vikings, the Morgawr, a fading Britain, the pull of the sea—under the sway of Alternative TV’s Vibing Up the Senile Man (Part One), the mechanical vernaculars of Robert Ashley, and the deflated humour of Dad’s Army and It Ain’t Half Hot Mum.

Andrew Chalk - Mystical Obscurant LP

Over the course of more than four decades, Andrew Chalk has created one of ambient and experimental music's most distinctive, influential, and enduring bodies of work. Though his recordings have taken many forms—from the raw, post-Industrial sounds of Ferial Confine in the 1980s to the fragile guitar meditations, blurred keyboard studies, and richly textured collages that populate the Faraway Press catalogue—they remain united by a singular sensibility: an uncommon attentiveness to atmosphere, nostalgia, and the power of restraint.

Mystical Obscurant offers a rare opportunity to encounter the expansive character of that oeuvre in miniature. Rather than documenting a single period or methodology, it functions almost like a survey of Chalk's musical language—a collection of new music that illuminates the breadth of his practice while distilling the singular vision that unites it.

Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra
Concerts à Prades Le L*z Vol, 1 + Vol. 2

By Ken Waxman
https://www.jazzword.com/.../intercommunal-free-dance.../
A different sort of dance inference was expressed in 1974 By France’s Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra (Souffle Continu Records FFL 090) during Concerts à Prades Le L*z Vol. 1 + Vol. 2. Led by keyboardist François Tusques an early continental Free Jazz advocate, the five-piece “orchestra” was a leftish innovation designed to meld progressive politics, so-called world and creative music with more popular forms to appeal to a larger populace. So despite seemingly revolutionary and agitprop titles, the sounds are actually syncopated not subversive and not surprisingly more danceable than doctrinaire. Additionally, unlike other more self-consciously proletarian-focused bands that mistook amateurish for authenticity, the same high musical standards apply here as in Tusques’ more (musically) progressive projects. What that means is that a tune like “On N’est Pas Chez Les Colonels”, referencing military leaders who overthrow elected government, starts at march tempo becomes a Latin-influenced foot tapper based around honky-tonk piano and French euphonium player Michel Marre’s huffs and soon adds a shouting chorus and hand clapping. Meanwhile “Chanson Pour Pierre Overney”, celebrating a French Maoist activist killed during a Renault factory protest, is as bittersweet as beat oriented with a formalist and processional grand piano emphasis, and then weaves through a sequence that contrasts note-bending melancholy breathes from Guinean soprano saxophonist Jo Maka and triumphant gutbucket blasts from Togo-born trombonist Adolphe Winkler and culminates in a group ending. Even the chant-like anti-colonialist “Un Peuple Qui En Opprime Un Autre Ne Peut Pas Etre Un Peuple Libre” get its power from keyboard slaps, tambourine shakes and hearty percussion pumps from single-named Algerian percussionist Guem as warm trombone grace notes and ripples focus a mellow lightness that floats over the tune. Elsewhere there are segues into bobbing Breton dance music and heavily percussive African rhythmic extensions – perhaps something for every taste in the early 1970s

Actress & Suzanne Ciani
Concrète Waves 2LP

As “avant techno” laptop and drum machines combine with the fabled Buchla of a “neoclassical electronic pioneer”, the scope of Concrète Waves looks beyond generation to span equipments, mediums, and sonic cultures. A conjunction of analogue and digital, of the philosophies informing Actress’s “R&B concrète” and Ciani’s 1982 album Seven Waves.

This release marks the reactivation of Actress's Werkdiscs imprint founded in 2002, and captures their co-commissioned performance at The Barbican, London alongside Barcelona’s renowned Sónar, exploring a fluid quietude where rumbling Buchla stormclouds emerge, whirlwinds of offkilter rhythms fluctuate, and soft industrial clangs allow flowing ribbons of analogue synth to take centre stage.
