Berkeley Books of Paris Berkeley Books was an independent American bookshop, cultural space, and bastion of free thinkers. An American bookshop in Paris. Est. 2006. Haven for book nerds.

After many happy years in Paris, the last of the bookshop's three founders retired to the French countryside in January 2020. We buy, sell, and swap used books. Bastion of free thinkers. A place to read until late. We also host readings, art exhibitions, and tiny concerts.

The bookshop retired, along with its owner, at the end of last year. It was a beautiful run, and I'm grateful for all the good times I had there. Merci mille fois to all the artists, poets, and musicians who made the place so special.

An example of the serendipity that occurred all the time at Berkeley Books: the packing bit inadvertently turned into a party. I spot a book and say, "This one goes right into the van! The great poet Daniel Woody brought this to me all the way from Chicago."

There are only a handful of people in the shop, but the rum is flowing. "Wait!" someone says, "Daniel Woody? I know him! I used to be his bartender in Chicago. He is such a great poet. You know him?"

Why yes, that's how lucky I am. He hauled this beautiful book on a plane just for me.

Have just now started to unpack the boxes I hauled away from Berkeley Books. So many feelings, all of them good.

As a melancholy sort, I fully expected a bout with sadness, but no. Not a hint of it. I take that as a sign that I moved at the right time.

Just arrived home after driving through most of France. It was a beautiful ride.

I couldn't be happier with the last, brief chapter in the history of Berkeley Books.

Merci to everybody who showed up and shared so much bookshop love.

Tomorrow morning I'll be driving north, way the hell north, through most of France. If my lucky streak holds out, I'll be in Paris by sunset.

If you have book credit, or would like a last chance to buy books from me, Tuesday and Wednesday will be a good time for it.

I'm not sure what I did to deserve this largesse, but a customer who loves the bookshop is going to help me pack up some books. As it turns out, this friendly young bibliophile is also a virologist at l'Institut Pasteur.

He's working every day in a hazmat suit to help the rest of us, and I feel charmed that he's offered to help me pack up the beloved bookshop. He just wrote to say that he's looking forward to helping out, and he's bringing masks to keep at the front door of the shop.

If you're planning to swing by Berkeley Books just to say goodbye, know that I'm wild about you, but I will only be there for three days, have much work to do, and I have the immune system of a flea. Only come by if you've bought book credit in advance, or if you're prepared to take away a box of books.
